摘要:
AbstractGenetically modified sunflower oil, so called ‘high oleic’ sunflower oil, is a promising and environmentally friendly fluid that possesses many advantages as a lubricating oil. It will be more usable if its performance as lubricating oil can be optimised by additives. In the present study, we have examined model friction modifiers under boundary lubrication conditions to understand their applicability to vegetable oils. Octadecanoic acid provides good lubricity. Octadecyl amine and octadecanamide are also acceptable, whereas octadecane thiol exhibits a negative effect on lubric

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents a short overview of the background to EP additives and their operating mechanism in relation to temperature activation, in the formulation of water‐miscible metal working fluids. The physical and chemical properties, determined using standard laboratory equipment, and dynamic tests, of different formulations of water‐miscible metal working fluids are given. The main work reported here was to compare the EP performance of available commercial additives, looking particularly at commercial variations of phosphate esters as replacements for chlorparaffins. The paper concludes that the ‘tapping and drilling’ test, which is a relatively good simulation of practical conditions in metalworking operations, can be successfully used as a way of selecting the appropriate EP additives, and for formulation of the conc

摘要:
AbstractSynthetic esters are widely used as base‐oil components in top‐tier crankcase lubricant formulations. In combination with synthetic hydrocarbons, an ester content of between 10 and 50 wt.% is common. Only a few engine oils with an ester content above 85 wt.% have been introduced on to the market as yet. The use of such engine oils is advantageous, especially in environmentally sensitive areas, in terms of volatility, particle emissions, and biodegradability. Some older types of heavy‐duty diesel engine continue to be run in vehicles and in machinery in the construction industry, and in such engines a higher lead content has been detected when ester‐based engine oils have been used. It has been found that lead is extracted from the bearings and accumulates ultimately in the engine oil during operation. Consequently, the development of a suitable inhibitor system has been initiated to improve engine and bearing protection. To determine the effectiveness of the new inhibitors, a suitable test method had to be found.Using a test method based on the Petter WI (CEC L‐02‐A‐78) test engine, the present paper summarises the results of tests on an inhibitor system to prevent lead extraction from bearings The metal contents reported in this paper were determined by ion conductive plasma atomic emission

摘要:
AbstractThe US Air Force Wright Laboratory's Materials Directorate has been involved with the development and transition of advanced fluids and lubricants since the 1950s. The driving force for the development of new hydraulic fluids has primarily been and still is, improved fire resistance, although biodegradability and low toxicity have become increasingly important. This paper briefly traces the use of military aircraft hydraulic fluids from the beginning to the current state‐of‐the

摘要:
AbstractPremium quality synthetic passenger vehicle engine oils have been marketed by the authors' company since the early 1970s. During this time, the performance benefits of synthetic‐based engine oils have been documented in a wide variety of engine and vehicle tests. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that, with the use of synthetic base oils and advanced additive technology, low viscosity oils can be formulated that have high fuel efficiency but which retain superior engine protection and performance reserves. Specifically, two synthetic engine oils, an SAE OW–40 and an SAE OW–30, have been developed that exceed the highest industry standards in both US (AP1)and European (ACEA) fuel economy and durability engine tests. The high quality of this technology is demonstrated in industry‐standard engine and laboratory performance tests, as well as non‐standard tests, such as extended‐length engine tests, vehicle fuel economy tests, high mileage chassis rolls tests, and extended oil drain ‘over‐the‐ro
