AbstractSynthetic coolants for the metalworking industry represent a wide array of chemical designs. The chemical types generally found in commercially available synthetic coolants are reviewed in terms of their treatability and their effect on the environment. Waste treatment schemes are discussed for two simple examples of anionic and nonionic aqueous based synthetic coolants respectively. The results obtained show that synthetic coolants may be successfully waste treated by conventional means. Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) are considered to be key parameters for measuring the waste‐treatability of aqueous synthetic coolant

AbstractThe work reported here demonstrates that very small quantities of perfluoropolyether fluids will provide effective boundary lubrication for a number of plastics materials. This includes plastics which are known to benefit from trace quantities of lubricants, as well as high‐temperature plastics, where a reduction of two orders of magnitude in wear rate can be achieved at temperatures up to 200°C. AbstractTwo‐stroke outboard engines have long been considered noisy and polluting devices. However, attitudes towards these engines are changing thanks to the introduction of new engine designs and high dilution, low pollution outboard oils. In this paper the development of such oils is described. It is shown that using esters, with their excellent lubricity and inherent biodegradability, it is possible to formulate outboard oils with high performance in all respects.When these oils are combined with automated oil supply systems, to avoid misblending and oil spillage, an optimal and environmentally friendly system is obtained. It is, however, desirable that appropriate legislation is established to speed up the introduction of these system
