摘要:
AbstractThe analysis of lubricating oils commonly practised in petroleum laboratories is important in following the evolution of products available on the market. Several analysis methods have been proposed, particularly by Van Rysselberge,1Amos2and Coates.3All these extremely useful methods make use of conventional separation and identification techniques such as molecular distillation, dialysis, bydrolysis, chromatographic techniques, spectragraphic techniques and chemical methods for determining functional groups. Their main aim is to identify the different types of additives present in lubricants. For several years now, however, base stocks have also been composed of synthetic products. Therefore, it seems important to add a simple method of ester identification to these analytical methods. Esters are normally analysed by saponification (to determine water‐insoluble acids and polyols) and by hydrolysis (for water‐soluble alcohols). Yet a complete reduction transforming constituent acids into alcohols simultaneously reveals all the elements making up an ester. Its reconstitution is then relatively easy. This reduction technique can be applied not only to esters but also to polymethacrylates used as viscosity index improvers and to antioxidant zinc dithiophospha

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes the lubrication and cooling systems of modern electricity generating plant, particularly those of the generator. The paper discusses the development of the power plant manufacturing industry and shows how critical the selection of lubricants and coolants is on the efficiency of the plant. The operation and layout of plant of up to 1,200 MW power rating are described and the various lubrication and cooling systems which are incorporated are identified. The cooling media discussed include non‐synthetic, semi‐synthetic, and synthetic fluids, and in each case the reasons for its selection are examined. Basic design calculations relating to lubrication and cooling systems are included. The paper concludes by examining trends in plant design and how they may affect future selection of lubricants and coola

摘要:
AbstractThis paper discusses the lubrication requirements of turbocharged passenger car engines and describes some of the experience obtained with petroleum based oils. Features of ester and polyalphaolefin synthetic lubricants are discussed in relation to the requirements of turbocharged engines. An attempt is made to review the present situation with regard to the lubricant types accepted by motor manufacturers and the implications of equipment design changes.

摘要:
AbstractMany useful papers are published about the technical development and testing of synthetic lubricants and functional fluids, yet it is also important to appreciate the market environment in which these products are used. However, hard data on market shares and producers' intentions are difficult to obtain, because of the obvious demands of commercial secrecy. This paper represents the author's assessment of the European commercial context, examines recent demand for different classes of synthetic lubricant and functional fluid, and their applications, and offers a considered assessment of the situation in the 1990s.
