Autopsies in Japan are published annually. 633 autopsies with motor neuron disease and 236 with Parkinson''s disease are extracted along with control diseases, 550 with craniocervical injuries, 403 with myocardial infarction and 440 with pulmonary tuberculosis for 1964–1978. Accompanying diseases and pathological findings, excluding agonal and other irrelevant changes, were compared by sex and age in these conditions. Frequencies of the complications showed no practical difference from each of the control diseases to motor neuron disease and Parkinson''s disease in both sexes, indicating no association of the two diseases with other disorders recognizable at autops

89 cases of motor neuron disease (MND) were identified in Värmland County during the period 1970–1981. This amounts to an annual incidence rate of 2.6 per 100,000 population, sex- and age-adjusted to the USA population, 1.7. The average point prevalence was 8.5 per 100,000 population and the median duration of MND was 25 months. 95% of the MND cases in Värmland County were coded MND on their death certificates. MND was overrepresentated in persons performing heavy manual labor. A significantly higher mortality rate of MND in Värmland County was found compared to all Sweden (p < 0.01). The regional variation in cerebrovascular disease mortality within England and Wales has been described and analyzed using data for two time periods: 1969–1973 and 1975–1979. A stable geographical pattern emerges which is substantially similar for the two sexes. The possibility of this variation being caused by differences in certification practice is discounted. The variations show some significant correlation with indices measuring the size and quality of medical services. A significant positive correlation between the geographical patterns for cerebrovascular disease and ischaemic heart disease has been found. Possible explanations are discussed.
