This paper describes approaches towards building high-speed terabit per second fiber-optic communication networks capable of supporting several hundreds of nodes, with each node being provided bandwidths of the order of 1 Gb/s.We describe network architectures using wavelength division multiplexing, where the terabit per second capacity is achieved by having many communication channels (perhaps a few hundred), each operated at a modest bit rate at a different optical wavelength in the Tiber.These networks can be classified into two categories: broadcast-and-select networks, and switched networks. We can also classify these networks as single-hop or multihop. We discuss the network architecture, component needs, and protocol issues associated with each category, and speculate about future trends in lightwave networks.

The process of digitisation of the telephone network in India is well underway, with the digitisation of the trunks and introduction of digital switches. If the local loops are also digitised, it is possible to have end-to-end digital connectivity, making it possible to provide narrowband ISDN services, at least in selected areas. This paper describes methods of using existing switches and multiplexers in the Indian telephone network to provide narrowband ISDN services. The paper also proposes some novel ways of providing optical-fibre local loops which may be cost effective.

It is now well recognised that modelling and performance analysis is an important and necessary part of the development cycle of any large telecommunication system. In this paper we demonstrate some of the techniques that are used, and the kinds of results that can he obtained, by describing a detailed performance analysis that we have done for the Centre for Development of Telematics' Digital Switching System (C-DoT DSS). We have used a simulation model to evaluate the performance of the Hase Module (ISM). This model yielded an estimate of BM capacity, helped to design and evaluate a new overload control, and showed how BM capacity can be improved by a scheduling change. We have used analytical queuing models to estimate the capacities of the Administrative Processor, and the Space Switch Controller. We have formulated the system overload control problem as a constrained optimisation problem, have solved the problem, and have used simulations to evaluate various adaptive overload control algorithms.

With the coming of age of fibre-optic technology, data rates of 100 Mb/s are becoming common in local area and even wide area networks. To make such bandwidths available to applications, efficient design and implementation of the transport layer is crucial. In this paper, we survey recent developments in this area. We first look at the performance of traditional transport protocols and see that these are inadequate. We then discuss the reasons for this poor performance and explore design and implementation choices than can yield high performance. Finally, we describe several high-speed transport protocols that have been implemented recently.

Standardization, prototyping and application of unidirectional bus networks are introduced followed by a detailed description of Distributed Queue Dual Bus Medium Access Control (DQDB MAC) protocol. A review of throughput analysis and delay performance of the MAC protocol along with a survey of related literature is presented.

Spread Spectrum Multiple Access Code Sequences find use in a number of systems where spread spectrum technologies are employed for digital communications. Broadly, these“spectrum spreading”code sequences can be classified into two categories,viz, direct sequence codes and frequency hoping codes. This paper first presents a brief review of the important classes of existing code sequences and then goes on to present some interesting new results obtained by the authors recently. These results enable us to construct several useful classes of sequence sets, which possess both optimal (or near optimal) correlation properties as well as a large linear span. The large linear span is desirable in many applications where communication security is of interest.

The finite precision issue of an adaptive digital equalizer of a communication channel is dealt in this paper. The equalizer is assumed to employ a computationally efficient Block Least Mean Square (BLMS) Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Adaptive Filter (AF). The concept of adaptation failure of the equalizer under constrained word length is discussed and an analysis is carried out to account for this effect using a new approach based on probability density. This analysis has led to an important relation between the Probability of Adaptation Failure (PAF), the word length and the filter length of the equalizer. This relation shows that for a specified PAF, the word length requirement decreases with increase in the filter length. This theoretical finding has also been verified by computer simulation. Exhaustive finite and infinite precision simulations reveal that below a word length of 6 bit (excluding the sign bit) the performance of the equalizer degrades drastically and at 9 bits its performance becomes identical to that of the infinite precision case. Optimum word length required to achieve a given performance can be selected from the results of this paper.
