摘要:
In this paper the transient thermal stress problem for a hollow elastic cylinder containing an internal circumferential edge crack is considered. It is assumed that the problem is axisymmetric with regard to the crack geometry and the loading, and that the inertia effects are negligible. The problem is solved for a cylinder that is suddenly cooled from inside. First the transient temperature and stress distributions in an uncracked cylinder are calculated. By using the equal and opposite of this thermal stress as the crack surface traction in the isothermal cylinder the crack problem is then solved and the stress intensity factor is calculated. The numerical results are obtained as a function of the Fourier number tD//b2representing the time for various inner-to-outer radius ratios and relative crack depths, where D and b are respectively the coefficient of diffusivity and the outer radius of the cylinder.

摘要:
An analysis is presented of the thermal stresses in a partially absorbing flat plate due to sudden interruption of steady-state asymmetric thermal radiation on the front face with convection cooling at the rear face. Maximum transient tensile stresses occur in the rear surface and are almost independent of the heat transfer coefficient, h. For optical thicknesses of ≥ 0.5 μa, the maximum tensile stress initially rises to reach a peak and then decreases with time. In contrast, for thicknesses ≤ 0.5 μa, the stresses decrease monotonically. It is shown that a plot of nondimensional stress as a function of nondimensional time for a given value of pa and h does not result in a universal plot from which thermal stresses can be obtained for any value of plate thickness.

摘要:
In Part II of this study the thermal stresses are analyzed in a partially absorbing flat plate, due to a sudden interruption of steady-state asymmetric radiation on the convectively cooled front face. As in the case of Part I, the maximum tensile stresses occur in the rear face. For the optical thickness μa ≥ 0.5, the maximum tensile stress initially rises to a peak and then decreases with time. On the other hand, for μa ≤ 0.5, the stresses decrease monotonically with time.

摘要:
The general problem of the one-dimensional linearized simultaneous equations of thermoelasticity has been solved in the Laplace transform domain by following the algebraic eigenvalue approach. This is an alternative which retains the original structure of the problem compared to the recent state space methodology of Bahar and Hetnarski [1, 2]. The use of thermoelastic potential is thus avoided. The results obtained can be used to a broad class of problems in thermoelasticity or other coupled fields. Applications to problems pertaining to a half space and a layer are presented.

摘要:
A theory of thermoelastic polynomials that determine fundamental solutions of a central equation of linear thermoelasticity with finite wave speeds is developed. The polynomials define series solution of the Neumann type for an integro-differential equation on the time axis associated with a method of separation of variables for the central equation. A number of recurrence relations defining basic properties of the thermoelastic polynomials are presented. In particular, it is shown that the polynomials can be identified with an element of the null space of a linear ordinary differential operator.

摘要:
This paper is concerned with a transient thermal stress problem in a finite circular transversely isotropic solid cylinder subjected to an asymmetrical temperature distribution on a cylindrical surface. The stress fields are found by use of potential functions method. As an example, the temperature and stress fields for a specific case are computed for the sake of comparison to the isotropic body.

摘要:
In this paper, the equations representing the one-dimensional, linearized, simultaneous, coupled problem of magnetothermoelasticity are arranged in the form of a matrix differential equation in the Laplace transform domain. The problem is then converted to an algebraic eigenvalue problem and solved in the same domain. The results obtained can be used to solve a broad class of problems in magnetothermoelasticity. Applications to problems pertaining to a half-space and a layer are presented. The results obtained for some special cases are compared to the results in the literature.
