摘要:
The behavior and distribution of the normal component of the force stress tensor exerted by a change of temperature on a part of the bounding plane is examined. The temperature change, on a circle or an annulus, is prescribed so that the amount of heat applied is constant. The effect of the material constants a0and l2on the distribution of stresses is also investigated. Results are shown in diagram form. We also point out that some approximate methods of computing the Hankel transforms encountered in problems of micropolar thermoelasticity may lead to erroneous results.

摘要:
This paper is concerned with the propagation of plane harmonic waves of small amplitude in a heat-conducting elastic body of unrestricted symmetry that is not stress free in its undisturbed state. The novelty of the treatment given here consists first in a derivation of the secular equation in a form that makes transparent the association of low- and high-frequency behavior with isentropic and isothermal conditions, and second in the introduction of a multivalent modal function whose regular branches determine the complex slownesses of the possible modes of wave propagation in a given direction. The development of a general analysis of harmonic waves on this basis yields a natural classification of the modes and leads, via a standard result in the theory of algebraic functions, to series representations of modal properties that are valid near the extremes of the frequency range. Attention is subsequently directed to situations in which simplified features of the kind displayed by thermoelastic waves in an initially stress-free isotropic medium are realized. This part of the work is prompted by ideas first evolved in connection with singular surfaces, and the paper concludes with an appraisal of the relationships between harmonic and acceleration waves in the context of thermoelasticity.

摘要:
This paper describes an investigation of the photothermoelasticity measurement technique by means of heating. The physical and optical properties of epoxy resin (Araldite B) were investigated over a temperature range of 20-60°C The technique and equipment developed to measure the thermal-stress and temperature distributions in a semi-infinite plate of epoxy resin demonstrate that excellent results can be obtained within a temperature range from room temperature to 60°C. The heating method was also used to measure the transient thermal stresses in semi-infinite plates having circular and arc-shaped notches.

摘要:
The temperature dependency of the dynamic moduli of elasticity of steel and aluminum and copper alloys was investigated experimentally by an ultrasonic-wave method, in the temperature range from —196 to 1000°C. The results are compared with those obtained by the resonant-frequency method and are represented as empirical formulas. Useful data for commercial alloys are given in tables, by chemical composition.

摘要:
Based on experimentally generated data such as thermal and transformation strains, temperature-dependent elastic-plastic properties, time-dependent thermal profiles, and core and case chemistry, this paper traces the stress history and development of residual stress fields in case-hardened carburized-steel cylinders from the onset to the final stages of quenching. Results were obtained by the use of a modified thermoelastic-plastic finite-element procedure. Special emphasis was given to establishing quantitatively the degree of involvement of the temperature fields associated with the heat treatment, plastic flow, austenite-to-body-centered-tetragonal phase transformation, and case and core chemistry in the development of such residual fields in both the case and the core. To verify the results, the final fields were corroborated by the X-ray diffraction procedure.

摘要:
The local stresses developed during the extrusion of Ti-6Al-4V are calculated. Two examples with widely different flow fields are considered. The strain-rate field is determined by visioplasticity methods, and the temperature fields used are those obtained in Part 2. The effect of adiabatic heating on the material response is explicitly considered

摘要:
The connection between the thermoelastic potential and the state space approach to thermoelasticity is established. It is shown that a formulation based on a state vector that consists of the Laplace transforms of the thermoelastic potential and its three spatial derivatives has advantages owing to the simpler nature of the matrix involved.

摘要:
The stability of the solutions proposed by M. L. Williams for the heated plate without transverse pressure is studied using equations derived from the Trefftz criterion. For the clamped condition, it is found that the plate will buckle into a periodic mode shape before reaching the critical point at which the cylindrical deflections proposed by Williams are possible. For the simply supported condition, an approximate (Galerkin) solution of the stability equations establishes that the primary path is stable (for small values of the thermal moment M¯T) and predicts that secondary bifurcation will occur at a value of the heating parameter N¯T=4.498.
