Blood glucose, plasma pituitary growth hormone (HGH), and human placental lactogen (HPL) were measured in 10 normal women. Each subject was tested during midpregnancy (26 weeks) and again during the late (greater than 6 weeks) postpartum period. The tests included fasting and resting blood samples and samples taken during insulin-induced hypoglycemic stress. The results showed that fasting HGH levels did not change during midpregnancy, but that the HGH response to hypoglycemic challenge decreased. The possible roles of Cortisol and HPL in suppressing HGH and the correlation between biochemical and anatomic data are discussed.

Radioimmunoassay of serum from 151 women with normal and 89 with complicated pregnancies revealed a linear increase in human placental lactogen concentration as pregnancy progressed to term. There was greater variability in serum levels during the last 4 weeks than during earlier periods of pregnancy. The rising placental lactogen levels paralleled the increase in placental weight. No correlation was found between fetal outcome and randomly obtained placental lactogen levels in the serum of patients with diabetes mellitus, sickle cell anemia, toxemias, erythroblastosis and small-for-date babies.

Colpography demonstrates an almost horizontal axis to the normal upper vagina of the patient in standing position, which is accentuated by straining. The upper vagina and the rectum lie upon the similarly horizontal levator plate, formed posterior to the rectum by the fused levator ani muscles. The cervix and upper vagina, though movable, are held over the levator plate posterior to the genital hiatus by the cardinal and uterosacral ligaments. Pathologic elongation of these ligaments may permit the vagina to invert. If, in addition, the axis of the levator plate is defective, prolapse is even more likely to develop. Postoperative recurrent prolapse is less likely to develop when the goal of the vaginal reconstructive operation is to maintain depth and reconstitute the horizontal upper axis.

Fallopian tubes, removed at operation from 100 tubal ectopic pregnancies, were injected with barium sulphate/gelatine suspension and radiographs taken. Histologic sections were then examined. One hundred control tubes were treated in the same fashion, and the findings in the two groups were then compared. The tubes from 50 autopsies of infants and children were also injected with contrast medium and studied microscopically in a search for congenital lesions. Tubal diverticula were found in 49% of gravid tubes as compared with 11% of those of the control group. Diverticula were confined to the isthmus and the proximal portion of the ampulla. They were not seen in the tubes of infants and children examined at autopsy, but an etiologic relationship with chronic inflammation was suggested. On the basis of this study, it appears also that the lesions referred to as salpingitis isthmica nodosa are in fact diverticula.

Cells derived from human ovarian cortical stroma were grown in short-term tissue culture. Oxidative enzymatic activity, considered necessary for the synthesis and metabolism of steroid hormones, was studied by histochemical methods. The systems studied were DPN and TPN diaphorase, 3 β-ol dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Enzymatically active stromal cells were demonstrated; the percentage and intensity of activity varied with the particular enzymes and the nature of the specimen. Tissue culture studies of cortical stroma are useful for investigating steroidogenesis.

Estradiol, alone and in combination with progesterone, caused stimulatory changes consistent with its known effects in vivo when added to the medium of cultures of human endometrium. The addition of progesterone to cultures previously incubated in estradiol-con-taining medium caused typical estradiol effects but no secretory alterations.

Two cases of extramanunary Paget's disease of the vulva are presented. The microscopic and histochemical studies suggest that the disease was of epidermal origin. No evidence of a preceding or an underlying carcinoma was found in either patient.

The Gravlee jet washer was used to obtain endometrial cytology samplings from 107 patients as a preoperative procedure. Of these patients, 43 complained of premenopausal vaginal bleeding, 29 had postmenopausal bleeding and 35 had no abnormal bleeding. Washing material was evaluated after cell block, membrane filter preparations and sediment smears using a standard Papanicolaou stain were done; The cannula could not be inserted in 3 patients. Washings were in agreement with cell block results in 101 of 104 patients. The cell blocks of 2 patients indicated adenocarcinoma, but their surgical specimens showed normal endometrium–these two patients were shown to have ovarian adenocarcinoma at laparotomy. In 1 patient, the endometrial washing was inadequate because of excess blood, and the curettage specimen showed endometrial hyperplasia. The data were tabulated and comparisons made between this washing procedure and more conventional methods. The value of this technic as a screening procedure for endometrial neoplasm is emphasized.

Using two different methods for quantifying simple external uterine measurements in gravid patients near term, uterine size was related to newborn birth weight. The data failed to prove that more precise measurement of fundal size would allow accurate prediction of birth weight. Largest errors occurred with infants of low birth weight.
