Among a group of 288 patients subjected to partial colpocleisis and followed 5 years or longer, 92.2% had good or excellent long-term results, while 6.9% judged themselves either slightly or not improved. One patient later developed endometrial cancer and was successfully treated surgically. This experience indicates that the Le Fort partial colpocleisis is the procedure chosen in the treatment of the aged, debilitated patient with severe uterovaginal prolapse for whom coital function is no longer of concern.

Measurement of the content of a renin-like enzyme in the uterus of dogs—comparing pregnant and nonpregnant dogs, with or without kidneys—pointed to its probable secretion in the uterus. This uterine substance is not only increased during pregnancy but it bears a direct relationship to uterine weight. Nephrectomy further augments the uterine content of the enzyme.

There was no significantly different outcome of pregnancy among 442 patients who became pregnant following cessation of the use of oral contraceptives, when compared to the pregnancies of a similar series of 699 patients who had employed other contraceptive measures. An ancillary observation noted that 608 (53%) of the total of 1141 gravidas had not planned to become pregnant; yet, three-fourths of them had not employed any form of conception control.

The incidence of monilial vulvovaginitis was compared between 3179 women given oral contraceptive drugs and 5240 not given them. Clinical monQiasis in the treated patients progressively increased as the duration of oral contraceptive medication increased, whereas the controls' rate of infection was fairly constant. Of the 3179 women given oral contraceptive medications, 44 had had clinical vulvovaginal moniliasis before and continued to have the problem while taking the medications; 181 experienced it for the first time. More than 1 in 10 of the husbands of the 225 affected women had balanoposthitis. One in 17 of the 225 had a hereditary background of diabetes mellitus, but their oral glucose tolerance tests were normal. The incidence of candidiasis was not related to the type of oral contraceptive used. A small percentage of women suffered genital moniliasis repeatedly; such infections did not tend to clear up until the oral contraceptive medication was discontinued.

The administration of meprobamate during one or more trimesters of pregnancy to nearly 800 women because of some anxiety-evoked symptom enabled comparison of pregnancy outcome with that of more than 5000 other gravidas from the same private practice. No deleterious effect upon the pregnancy or fetus was observed in the meprobamate-treated group; the ratios to normal births of congenital abnormality, prematurity, stillbirth, and abortion were unaffected by the meprobamate.

Of 28 patients whose uteri were repaired following rupture, 19 subsequently experienced 22 pregnancies. Only a single repeated rupture occurred. The good outcomes of later pregnancies support the value of conservative management of uterine rupture in selected patients.

The thirty-first primary ovarian carcinoid tumor to be reported, one associated with the carcinoid syndrome, is described in a postmenopausal subject. It is demonstrated that the microscopic pattern of an ovarian carcinoid is similar to that of a granulosa cell tumor, requiring close attention to distinguishing nuclear details for differentiation.

A normal cytologic pattern of a vaginal smear following oral administration of 2.5 mg of conjugated estrogens three times daily for 5 days during early pregnancy was more reliable in prognosticating a good pregnancy outcome than a vaginal smear unrelated to the taking of estrogen. But an abnormal vaginal cytologic pattern following such administration of estrogen was no more accurate in predicting abortion than an abnormal smear obtained prior to the use of estrogen.

Two cases of postpartum bacteremia with Haemophilus influenzae are reported. Endometritis was suspected in one patient, while the other had purulent amnionitis and placentitis from which gonococci, Bacteroides, E. coli, Pseudomonas and enterococci were isolated. The source of the bacteremia was not apparent in either patient. Both patients were treated with ampicillin and kanamycin, and they recovered.
