Ovarian biopsy was performed by surgical culdoscopy in 16 patients suffering from sterility due to amenorrhea or anovulation. This method was found to be useful in diagnosing permature menopause in 8 patients selected from our sterility clinic. In other patients, ovarian biopsy showed that surgical culdoscopy was superior to ordinary culdoscopy for evaluating ovarian structure and changes in the ovaries caused by ovulation stimulants.

Syringoma is a benign tumor of the eccrine sweat gland duct. Lesions are small flesh-colored to yellowish papules. They are usually asymptomatic and permanent and affect mainly females. Eyelids, neck and chest are the sites of predilection. Disseminate lesions can occur. External genitalia rarely may be involved. Three patients with vulvar involvement are described. They all presented with mutliple bilateral skin-colored papules over the labia majora. One patient also had similar lesions on the neck and chest. It is felt that syringoma of the vulva might be more common than is generally recognized.

Female hermaphroditism of the nonadrenal variety is clinically unusual. Among such patients is a special group of masculinized females in whom the cause of masculinization is unidentified and who also have serious multiple somatic anomalies. These patients have been considered to comprise a special group of female hermaphrodites. Fourteen examples are collected from the literature, and a new case report is recorded. The patient had an enlarged clitoris, double vagina, bicornuate uterus, anomalous position of the urethral meatus, congenital deafness, ectodermal defect, athyreotic cretinism, pancreatic achylia, mental retardation and primordial dwarfism.

There are instances when it would be useful to be able to predict that labor will or will not occur within a specified period of time. We measured creatinine, “fat cells,” and Δ OD450in amniotic fluids. For each test, a positive result was associated with spontaneous labor in 77 to 81% of the patients. However, if two or three of the test results were positive, then labor occurred within 3 weeks in 92 and 100% of the gravidas, respectively. Conversely, if two or three tests were negative, labor occurred within 3 weeks in only 24 and 5%, respectively.

The high prevalence of positive cytology of the uterine cervix in a group of female patients hospitalized with hepatitis was first reported in 1963. This study surveys a similar group of unselected patients and confirms an increased prevalence of positive cytology. Patients with hepatitis may represent a high risk group for neoplastic change in the cervix. Routine Papanicolaou smears and appropriate tissue biopsies are recommended to physicians seeing patients with hepatitis.

Serum magnesium levels were determined in 348 women. Study patients receiving a purely progestational agent, depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) had magnesium concentrations significantly higher than any other group (P< 0.001). Serum magnesium levels of pregnant women were significantly lower than those of other groups (P< 0.001). No statistically significant differences for magnesium levels of women utilizing oral contraceptives and their controls were found. The results are discussed as they relate to chemical contraceptives and blood clotting mechanisms.

Pheochromocytoma complicating pregnancy is a rare but often lethal condition. A review of the literature did not reveal any definite diagnostic complex. In any unexplained hypertension in pregnancy, the possibility of a pheochromocytoma should be excluded by appropriate laboratory testing. To illustrate the diagnostic difficulties, a case report of pheochromocytoma during pregnancy is presented.

Fetal heart rates and uterine tension were recorded during maternal orgasm in a gravida at term. Associated uterine contractions and deceleration of fetal heart rate were noted.
