Endemic trial biopsies were obtained on postabortal days 1 to 36* in '12 women without contraception, in 28 women using oral contraceptives, and in 12 women with intramerine devices. Tissue samples were examined for day-today sequential changes, specifically: a) regenerative, repair, proliferative and secretory activity, b) involution of pregnancy changes, c) inflammation. In the absence of contraception, the endometrium promptly regenerated. The earliest evidence of ovulation was on day 9. One-third of the women ovulated before the first period. Incomplete placental and decidual involution was seen in *15% of patients, but its frequency progressively decreased toward the end of observation. Inflammation seen in 26% was limited to the retained decidua and was, therefore, thought to be a reactive rather than an infectious phenomenon. In women taking oral contraceptives, initial regeneration was also prompt. “On pill” changes resembled the nonpostabortal picture except for a few-cases of cystic glandular dilation, or Arias-Stella-like phenomena. Retained decidua and inflammation were more frequent (75% and 689c) than m the noncontraceptive group, and the diminishing trend was not observed. In the iutrauterine device group, inflammation was more frequent (83%) than in the other two groups and was not limited to the decidua.

Maternal cytomegalovirus infection is a relatively common, yet very often silent complication of pregnancy. The association between early gestational wastage and cytomegalovirus endometritis has been documented in recent tissue culture studies without the morphologic demonstration of the virus. This case study presents the clinical and pathologic findings of a young, secundigravida female with cytomegalovirus endometritis and spontaneous abortion. The intranuclear inclusions were restricted to the endometrial glands. Involvement of the endocervix by cytomegalovirus has been the only site in the female reproductive tract, excluding fetal tissues, affected by this virus which has been demonstrated histologically. The data are still incomplete regarding the etiologic role, if any, of cytomegalovirus and the occurrence of spontaneous abortion.

Fetus papyraceus is a rare condition occurring in both monochorionic and dichorionic multiple gestations. Associated with the case presented were two interesting and uncommon findings: velamentous insertion of the umbilical cord of the blighted fetus and a congenital abnormality of the surviving fetus. This case is the first known intrauterine monitoring of a pregnancy involving a fetus papyraceus with serial plasma estriol and human placenta lactogen determinations.

Many methods of evaluating anatomic deformity of the urethrovesical angle are available. A new diagnostic device has been developed to determine the degree of rotation of the urethral axis, thus differentiating between type I and type II deformities causing stress incontinence. Preliminary study in 62 patients indicates that the instrument is accurate, simple, and easily interpreted. The device also has the advantage of being easily constructed, disposable, and inexpensive.

The growth areas in fetal assessment in late pregnancy have been studied by making a quantitative review of the papers in Tour obstetric journals. Of the 130 relevant papers published, in 1973, the most common subject treated was the phospholipid test of fetal lung maturity. Other important tests reviewed were estrogen assays, ultrasonic studies, human placental lactogen and alpha-fetoprotein measurements. The clinical value of phospholipid tests was demonstrated; liquor creatinine assays are much inferior in assessing fetal maturity. Plasma estriol assays are likely to be of increasing importance in clinical practice. Some caution should be applied in the interpretation of ultrasonic measurements of biparietal diameter as a test of fetal development and well-being.
