An unusual monochorionic placenta with heterosexual twins is described. One half of the placenta presented features which are found only with monochorionic placentas. The findings in the other half were consistent with monochorionic placentation in part, but a membranous ridge (containing layers of amnion and chorion on histologic examination) at the base of the dividing septum was highly suggestive of dichorionic placentation. It is suggested that this anomaly arose as a result of incomplete disintegration of the chorionic layers of the dividing septum during development.

The “mini-coner“ is a new disposable device for use in the gynecologist's office. It is designed to secure a superficial scrape biopsy of the squamocolumnar junction without pain, bleeding or technical difficulty. In initial field trials, 82 office patients were sampled. A definitive tissue diagnosis was possible in 80 of these specimens. The instrument appears to offer the advantage of supplying more diagnosable tissue specimens when the cytologic smear is doubtful, obscured or of poor quality or where a shortage of skilled cytotechnicians exists. It seems to facilitate sampling of the squamocolumnar junction without causing additional discomfort to the patient. It places no additional burden on the gynecologist or his staff, and for the most part, pathologists find tissue slides stained by routine hematoxylin and cosin easier to interpret than cellular spreads. It does increase the work of the tissue technician, and care must be taken to secure and embed the entire specimen so that no diagnostically valuable particle is lost.

Clinical and pathologic features of 24 serous adenofibromas of the ovary (including 3 undergoing malignant change) are presented. These tumors are more common than allusions to them in the literature would indicate. Hormonal activity seems to be a rare occurrence, as does malignant change. Insufficient time has elapsed for us to offer information regarding the prognosis of the malignant fibro-adenocarcinoma: however, it seems likely that it will not differ greatly from that for the more common serous cystadenocarcinomas.

Herpes genitalis was most frequently encountered in women of low socioeconomic status and during pregnancy. Mean age at detection was 27 years, and over 75% of the women were between 15 and 29 years. Approximately one third of the patients were asymptomatic and had no genital lesions. The nature and severity of the symptoms, the type, location and extent of genital lesions are discussed in relation to primary and recurrent disease. Herpes genitalis developing during pregnancy did not increase fetal mortality. Detection by suitably collected cellular samples was possible in over 95% of the patients. Antibody titer was important in evaluating primary and recurrent disease. Treatment was symptomatic. The possible role of herpes virus infection in carcinogenesis of cervical cancer is discussed.
