A histochemical study of Reinke crystalloids was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining additional information relative to their properties, composition, and form. The infrequently recounted data collected by Reinke on the properties of these structures were reviewed and confirmed. Other results of this study suggest that the crystalloids are not simple or conjugated mucins, saccharides, or lipids nor do they represent viruses, nucleoproteins, other protein conjugates or amyloid. Rather, they appear to be composed of simple globular proteins arranged in a pattern previously interpreted from studies by electron microscopy to represent a true crystalline lattice. The basis for their genesis, restricted distribution, and function (if any) remains wholly unknown.

Rabbits and infrahuman primates are often used as experimental models in studies of tubal transportation of ova. This study compares the muscular anatomy of the oviductal isthmus in man,M. mulatto, and the rabbit. The isthmic musculature is similar in the three species, specifically with regard to the presence of an inner longitudinal muscle layer in all. In the rabbit, the distal limits of this layer correspond to the site where ovum transport is delayed.

Adenocarcinoma of the endometrium occurring in a 79-year-old woman with ovarian agenesis is presented. The patient was treated by radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. The relationship of endometrial carcinoma with estrogen production is summarized.

The clinical and pathologic features of 10 female patients with leukoplakia of the bladder, including 3-5 years of follow-up, have been presented. Of the 10 patients, 4 were asymptomatic and the lesion was an incidental finding in cystoscopic examination prior to gynecologic evaluation. Resection and fulguration constitute treatment. None of the patients developed vesical carcinoma. Of the 10 patients 4 had associated squamous cell carcinoma of a genital organ, suggesting multicentric origins and emphasizing the value of investigating the urinary tract in patients with leukoplakia or carcinoma of the genital tract, and vice versa.

A patient with signs and symptoms of pelvic peritonitis was found on culdotomy to have retrograde menstruation. Some of the mechanisms possibly responsible for reflux menstruation are discussed. It is the purpose of this paper to draw attention to a benign gynecologic condition that occurs infrequently and has been neglected in most gynecologic textbook discussions of pelvic pain.

Intravenous injection of fresh solutions of nicotine, and simulated smoking of cigarettes were carried out upon pregnant ewes. Cardiovascular functions, including gaseous exchange and blood flow, of both the ewes and their fetuses were studied to note any acute effects. No significant changes were observed as a result of either nicotine administration or smoke inhalation.

Rapid scintiphotographic placental imaging using free99mTc-pertechnetate ion was performed in 96 women, 82 of whom had third-trimester bleeding classified as “mild” or “moderate.” Results of localization were expressed as “not placenta previa,” “equivocal for previa,” or “placenta previa,” and these classifications included 82, 8, and 6 patients, respectively. There were no false-positive or false-negative localizations; placenta previa occurred only in the moderate-bleeder group; and 2 of the 6 patients with placenta previa were adolescent primigravidas. Fetal radioisotope exposure was minimal. Scintiphotography using99mTc-pertechnetate eliminates confusion caused by active bleeding or bladder accumulation of isotope and permits more accurate localization than do other methods now in use.

Developmental Stages 3, 4, and 5 of human adrenal glands from 14 anencephalic fetuses (16 weeks' gestation—term) and 28 normal glands from autopsy specimens (8.5 weeks' gestation—4 years) were microscopically compared. The time of disappearance of the transient- zone significantly differed in normal and anencephalic adrenal glands. At birth the anencephalic adrenal was markedly smaller than the normal, but its zonular development was comparable to that of a 2- to 4-year-old normal adrenal gland.

Human fetal placental membranes undergoing inflammatory changes and exposed to meconium were investigated by electron microscope. The lesion of chorioamnionitis was characterized by extensive infiltration of the chorion by neutrophils with phagocytic granules. Occasional focal areas of necrosis of the amniotic epithelium with fragmentation of the basement membrane were noted. Meconium induced an exaggeration of the normal vacuolation of the amniotic cytoplasm with compression of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear indentation. Lysosomes storing dense material were present in the fibroblasts of the amniotic and chorionic stroma. Vacuoles containing a moderately dense material bulged into dilated intercellular channels, suggesting active participation in transfer of material between the amniotic cavity and the placenta.

Just prior to vaginal delivery of this primigravida, a benign cystic teratoma ruptured at the moment of needle aspiration (through the vagina), spilling irritating sebaceous material and hair into the abdomen. The resulting dense, granulomatous adhesions were resected, and the left adnexa removed 3 months later. The confusing resemblance to peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculosis was noted. Management of adnexal cysts during pregnancy is discussed briefly.
