One hundred forty-seven patients who had abnormal cervical cytologic smears (Class 3 or 4), and in whom diagnostic conization was not indicated according to strict criteria, underwent colposcopically-guided biopsies of the cervix, and 4-16 weeks later had a cone biopsy or hysterectomy. In only 4 patients (3%) was a significantly more advanced lesion found in the cone or hysterectomy specimen than in the colposcopic biopsy specimen, and in only one of these was carcinoma in situ present. In no patient, either on colposcopic biopsy or in the later specimens, was invasive carcinoma found.

Clomiphene treatment of 160 women infertile because of anovulation enabled the determination of comparative multiple-pregnancy rates. The group included 29 women with polycystic ovaries. There was a significantly greater number of multiple gestations among those with polycystic disease. This association was significant at the 0.05 confidence level.

Two examples of ectopic tubal epithelium in the pelvic peritoneum are described and illustrated. One was in association with bilateral ovarian serous cystadenocarcinoma and the other with endometriosis. The several theories of the pathogenesis of endosalpingiosis are reviewed, but the one involving metaplasia of the multipotential peritoneal cells is presented as the most acceptable.

Arginine evokes release of pituitary growth hormone in both pregnant and nonpregnant women. This study shows that such growthhormone response is independent of plasmaglucose concentration. The data also suggest that separate mechanisms may exist for the release of growth hormone in response to hypoglycemia and to amino acid infusion, implying that the hormone may have a different physiologic role in each circumstance.

Judged by growth of organisms in cultures, nearly all of 100 parturients had six different types of vaginal bacteria. The bacterial content of the vagina did not increase during labor, in spite of vaginal or rectal examinations (kept to a minimum for this investigation). Patients whose vagina harbored pathogenic bacteria did not necessarily experience clinical infection postpartum.

The epithelium of endocervical glands in a biopsy specimen of a clinical erosion of the cervix, obtained because of suspicious cytologic findings, was shown to contain intranuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions characteristic of cytomegalovirus. It is suggested that such cervical infection may or may not induce symptomatic disease, but when present during pregnancy, it could give rise to endometritis leading to either abortion or fetal infection.

Among the 1570 childbirths in a single institution during 1964, 119 (7.6%) of the mothers were shorter than 5 ft. There was no greater incidence of antepartum complications and of prematurity among the latter, group. Only twothirds of the short gravidas delivered spontaneously; the use of forceps to aid delivery doubled, and the cesarean section rate trebled, among these women.

Hemangioma of the placenta associated with hydrops fetalis, severe anemia, and hypoproteinemia in the absence of blood incompatibility and fetomaternal transfusion is reported. Similarities to changes resulting from erythroblastosis fetalis are described and the pathogenesis of hydrops discussed.

As results of tuboplastic procedures vary with the type of operation performed, comparisons should be based on some universally accepted system of identifying the several types of operation. Such a clasification is suggested, with a report on 115 tuboplastic procedures. The overall pregnancy rate was 15%, and 75% of the pregnancies terminated in live births. The undoing of prior tubal ligation gave the best results.

A 49-year-old woman developed localized arteriosclerosis and vascular insufficiency of the iliac and femoral arteries following pelvic irradiation for carcinoma of the ovary. Based upon a brief review of the pertinent literature, it was thought that the patient's vascular lesions— calcium deposition in the proliferative fibrous intima with fragmentation and separation of the internal elastic lamina as well as clot formation within the vessels, adherent to the intimal surface without marginal organization— were similar to those produced in the arteries of certain experimental animals exposed to irradiation. The type of localized change, the age of the patient, and the normal cholesterol level support the belief that the vascular injury was sustained during irradiation.
