摘要:
AbstractIn recent years, communication equipment performance and reliability have become dominated by software factors. The architecture of the software, as well as the hardware, has a substantial impact on the software performance and, thus, the equipment performance. This paper focuses on the software and hardware architectures of a time division multiple access (TDMA) terminal and a digital speech interpolation (DSI) unit, which have been specifically designed to optimize software performance. This equipment is designed to operate in the INTELSAT and EUTELSAT TDMA networks.

摘要:
AbstractThe paper describes the TDMA terminal manufactured by the French consortium regrouping TEL‐SPACE, SAT and CIT‐ALCATEL. Details on terminal organization, equipment modularity and operational aspects are first presented. The constituent parts of the terminal (common TDMA terminal equipment, DSI/DNI module, order wire module) are then described. Results of modem performances are also indicated. Finally, a description of the first French earth‐station operating with TDMA, Pleumeur‐Bodou 6, i

摘要:
AbstractThe traffic terminal equipment (TTE) for the INTELSAT TDMA System handles the actual traffic of the network and operates under control of the reference terminal equipment (RTE) installed at the reference station. The required function and performance for the TTE are specified in detail by the INTELSAT TDMA/DSI specification, but there may be many approaches to actual equipment design. NEC's TTE has been designed based on NEC's extensive experience and field‐proven circuit techniques. In addition, the TTE design has been affected by the fact that NEC has been engaged in the development and production of the RTE for INTELSAT.NEC's TTEs have been delivered to customers since the summer in 1984, with the first test with the RTE through the satellite having been successfully performed at COMSAT's Etam station at the end of 1984.This paper describes the capabilities of the traffic terminal equipment, developed and manufactured by NEC Corporation, together with the design approach used in its fabricatio

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents the design concept, the design features, and the configuration of the 120 Mb/s TDMA traffic terminal for use in the INTELSAT or EUTELSAT Systems. The description covers the redundancy concept, the control and supervisory system, the BTP processing method, internal interfaces between subsystems, expandability and capacity of the system, and the overall operation and maintenance concepts. The detailed design of each subsystem is discussed, from the IF interface with the earth‐station transmit and receive equipment down to the terrestrial interface equipment. Special emphasis is given to design features associated with redundancy of the terminal equipment yielding the required operation availability, and on the scheme for supervisory data handling across the international trunk circuit through the TDMA network. As a part of the discussion, the equipment mechanical sizes and anticipated heat dissipation are presente

摘要:
AbstractThis paper presents the major aspects of a 120 Mb/s QPSK modem developed for use within the INTELSAT TDMA network. Particular attention is focused upon the most important elements of the modem, namely the pre‐modulation lowpass filters, the demodulator AGC, the carrier and symbol timing recoveries and the demodulator filtering strategy. In addition to the modem description, details of a burst mode bit error rate test equipment will also be given. This test equipment was especially designed to simulate a practical TDMA working environment thus enabling the modem's burst mode performance to be evaluated in laboratory conditions. Finally, the modem's measured probability of bit errors versus Eb/No, and the probability of clock and carrier cycle skips versus Eb/Noare presented. Results of the modem performance both in IF and RF loop‐back are shown. The modem RF loop‐back performance was evaluated using an INTELSAT V satellite simu

摘要:
AbstractThis paper discusses the principles underlying the alignment, testing and maintenance procedures (A,T&M) in the INTELSAT TDMA/DSI network. These principles are used in order to define the A, T&M functional groupings necessary to fully and systematically evaluate and maintain the network. It is shown that, as in the testing of any complex system, the overall test programme can be broken‐down into a series of individual test elements. Test elements naturally fall into logical associations called functional groups and, for practical reasons, some functional groups must be evaluated before others. Since the various users of the TDMA system will employ a variety of different manufacturers' equipment, a universal method of organizing the test programme had to be devised. To provide a set of test procedures which are independent of specific equipment design, a reference configuration approach has been taken which reflects the involvement, time‐ordering and hierarchy of the functional groups. The objective behind the use of this reference configuration approach is to assist the development and conduct of the alignment, testing and maintenance procedures so as to ensure minimal interruption to an operational TDMA network. In addition, the use of this technique will facilitate the planning of A, T&M test schedules. Finally, it is shown how the reference configuration approach encompasses the INTELSAT TDMA traffic terminal Satellite Systems Operations Guide (SSOG) and the TDMA Reference Terminal Operations Guide (TR

摘要:
AbstractIn this paper the related matters of testing and maintenance of TDMA traffic terminals are discussed. Generally three types of testing are required: first of all testing to ensure that the equipment complies with the stipulations of INTELSAT (called application tests herein), secondly tests to ensure that a product has been manufactured in accordance with the design (manufacturing tests) and finally maintenance tests for the purpose of resolving equipment malfunctions. It is shown that application testing can be split between tests performed on an entire terminal and tests performed on individual subsystems, and that manufacturing testing best employs automatic software‐driven facilities. Finally it is shown that the best maintenance philosophy is to adopt a circuit card replacement strateg

摘要:
AbstractIn any wide bandwidth transmission system, the equalization of amplitude and group delay plays an important part in obtaining acceptable transmission quality. In the forthcoming INTELSAT TDMA/DSI system the need to measure the amplitude and group delay response in a time‐shared 80 MHz transponder has led to the design and construction of a new measuring instrument: the burst mode link analyser (BMLA). In this paper, the design principles and method of operation of the BMLA are discussed, together with an overview of its internal architectur

摘要:
AbstractThe operational use of TDMA in the INTELSAT system brings about an exciting major milestone in satellite telecommunications. To a certain extent, the performance of the technically complex, robust, centrally controlled TDMA/DSI system depends on the effectiveness of the alignment, maintenance and testing procedures. The wide range of disciplines encountered in such an advanced system may raise difficulties for the station staffs currently familiar with the existing FDMA network.Such problems have given rise to the birth of a conceptually new test equipment PDTS (PCM/DSI test set) to evaluate the performance of the DSI or DNI unit in a TDMA terminal. This equipment is capable of generating PCM test patterns in predetermined sequences and feeding them at the baseband channel level into the terrestrial interface of the DSI for purposes of operationally testing channel continuity, DSI assignment and cumulative BER during the test cycle. The present paper describes the general principles of PDTS as well as its operational use in the TDMA/DSI system.
