Ninety‐eight elderly people (mean age 83 years) were assessed soon after admission to long‐term‐care residences in Melbourne. Those entering facilities (‘far‐profit’) operating in the private sector had overall been less involved in pre‐entry planning and preparation than the elderly people who entered residences (‘nonprofit’) operated by religious, charitable or local government organisations. The elderly admitted to far‐profit residences also were less active, they demonstrated higher levels of homesickness and they experienced greater stress associated with institutional living. These results are consistent with other evidence that far‐profit and nonprofit long‐term‐care residences have different clientele. The aim of this study was to understand how housing attainment in old age interacts with life span vulnerabilities to influence the decision to move to a retirement village. Eighty residents were interviewed on reasons for moving to a resident funded village and a subsidised village. This paper reviews both national and international literature concerning aged relocation. Various types of relocation and the motivations for relocation are identified. The outcomes for the seniors who relocate and the target relocation areas are discussed. The stress that moving creates for the aged person is acknowledged.
