Psychogeriatric patients from a large metropolitan psychiatric hospital were surveyed for medication use. The demographic characteristics, medication use and case note diagnosis were documented Fifty‐nine percent had a diagnosis of dementia and 32% had a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Twenty percent of the patients received no psychotropic drugs. Fewer dementia patients were on psychotropic drugs than patients with other diagnoses. The increased life expectancy of mentally handicapped individuals, significant psychiatric morbidity in this population and the contemporary policy of community care is likely to result in increased referrals of elderly mentally handicapped patients with mental illness to psychogeriatric services. This will have implications for the organisation of services. Difficulties in the diagnosis of mental illness in a small series of elderly mentally handicapped patients are described. Techniques for improving diagnostic accuracy are discussed.

A review of the research literature reveals that there is extensive interest in the meaning of quality of life of elderly people, particularly those in residential facilities. Determining how best to uphold the quality of life of elderly people is a challenge for practictioner and researcher alike. This study attempts to clarify some of the important quality of life issues by asking a range of elderly people to look closely at aspects of their routines. The responses of those people living in nursing homes, hostels, retirement villages and in the family home were compared and the results indicated that satisfaction with perceived quality of life differed according to where people lived. Where one lives appears to influence not what one regards at most important in life, but rather how satisfied one is with it. Implications are drawn from the data for professionals and researchers working in the field.

This study sought to determine the extent to which people aged 65 years and over reduce their levels of social interactions as they age. Semi‐structured interviews were conducted with forty people from each of three distinct communities: a coastal community, an inner suburb and a retirement village. Participants were asked about their past activities, present pursuits and the activities, if any, in which they would like to be involved Problems with mobility were found to have the greatest impact on the abilify of the participants to do the activities of choice. This was not limited to the people who generally felt in poor health; those who perceived themselves to be very healthy also experienced a lack of mobility as a barrier to desired pursuits. In this study, it was apparent that those people with mobility problems off‐set the threat of isolation by spending more time in contact with their families and friends than participants whose mobility was not problemoric. The purpose of this study was to report on the average daily energy expenditure on selected daily activities by elderly persons and to determine whether a non‐supervised exercise program influences the amount of energy expended on these activities. A total of 164 non‐institutionalised volunteers with a mean age of 68±4.6 years of age maintained a diary of daily activities (household, gardening, maintenance, sport, miscellaneous) for a period of twelve months. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a prescribed or non‐prescribed exercise program. The reliability of the resulting data was established as being between 0.87 and 0.97. There were significant differences between the exercisers and non‐exercisers on energy expended, with the former group having higher mean scores on all activities.
