摘要:
The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution that rating scales can make to the understanding of the behaviour of people with dementia in a residential unit The participants were thirty eight residents in a Special Dementia Unit (SDU) organised as a hostel. Scores were recorded at staff meetings for the following scales: Crichton Royal Behavioural Rating Scale (CRBRS), Confusion Rating (CR), Barthel Index (BI), Cohen‐Mansfield Agitation Inventory (CMAI) and the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). It was found that the CRBRS and the CR provide a useful reference to mental and physical disabilities. Scores from the CMAI recorded the type, the frequency and the number of agitated behaviours displayed by individual residents. The majority of agitated behaviours belonged to the physically non‐aggressive category. Information from these scores was combined to construct residents' profiles. We concluded that the CRBRS, the CR and the CMAI can provide information about residents, both as individuals and as a group, which can assist in the understanding of behaviour and in the evaluation of the function of an

摘要:
Current clinical practice in Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs) in NSW and ACT regarding assessment of fitness to drive in clients with a diagnosis of dementia was examined. Of 42 ACATs with a geriatrician on staff, 38 (90.5%) responded to a telephone survey. Results showed that assessment of driver fitness is largely a medically based procedure, with functional on‐road assessment of driver competence occurring in 42.1% of ACATs. Use of the Mini Mental Status Examination in determining the severity of dementia and impact on driving was common (94.7%), although such predictive ability has not been demonstrated. Few ACATs (36.8%) systematically review drivers despite likely disease progression. 73.7% of ACATs reported experience of clients continuing to drive against advice. Approaches to assessment in city and rural ACATs are compare

摘要:
The Zarit Burden Scale (ZBS), the 30‐item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and a General Knowledge Test of Dementia (GKT) were administered to the primary family carers (usually a spouse or daughter) of 51 patients with dementia who had been admitted to two psychogeriatric nursing homes for mobile disturbed dementia sufferers. Informal carers for these patients demonstrated significant levels of burden and psychological morbidity up to two years after their demented relatives' admission to the nursing home. Spouse carers and carers from non‐English speaking backgrounds demonstrated significantly more burden than other car

摘要:
Disabled people waiting in public hospitals for nursing home admission restrict the available acute medical and surgical beds and therefore the ability of hospitals to provide acute and elective services. In areas where nursing home vacancies are scarce, people awaiting placement are often sent to distant areas where vacancies are frequent. We retrospectively studied 217 persons placed out of area from the Central Coast of NSW in 1994. We report their disabilities, their circumstances, factors leading to their transfer and their location at the end of the twelve month study period. Some of the reasons for their situation are discussed and plans for the future explored.

摘要:
In‐depth interviews are being conducted with relatives of nursing home residents regarding their experience of nursing home entry. This paper reports on preliminary analysis of the texts generated by interviews with nineteen relatives. Grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology, the study explores and describes these experiences. Seven themes are described which assist understanding of the experience from the decision making through to nursing home entr

摘要:
Hearing and vision impairment are prevalent among older people in long‐term care, contributing to their communication difficulties. Data on 44,012 nursing home residents were obtained with the Resident Classification Instrument, a rating scale designed to determine each resident's need for nursing and personal care, and hence entitlement to Federal funding. Comparison with related studies suggests that nursing home staff in Australia underestimate the contribution hearing loss makes to the communication difficulties of the residents in their care. An alternative approach to the assessment of the communication needs of residents is recommended to permit a more accurate assessment of need
