摘要:
ABSTRACTAn evaluation is reported of six projects funded under the HACC (Home and Community Care) Program from Commonwealth Unmatched Monies. Each project provided an innovative service delivery model and two of the key purposes of the evaluation were to determine whether or not these models had been effective in meeting individual needs and to determine the factors most critical to supporting people at home. The evaluation found that the projects had been effective from both a service and a cost perspective and identified as the key factors a sense of security based on a belief in one's ability to manage care in the home setting, access to available services, flexibility in the provision of services and supports, effective case management and the presence of a caregiver. An analysis of costs was also undertaken and the projects were found to be cost‐effective and considerably less expensive than equivalent care in a residential settin

摘要:
ABSTRACTA survey of 371 health practitioners from the Arabic speaking, Chinese, German, Greek, Italian and Anglo Australian communities investigated perceptions of the help aged people within these communities receive from, and give to, their families as well as community attitudes regarding such transfers. Positive and negative aspects of intergenerational relationships within the communities were also examined. Highly significant community differences were observed in responses to 22 of the 29 questions asked.

摘要:
Studies of caring for people with dementia have concentrated on the physical and psychological well‐being of the carer using a primarily individualistic model. By drawing on a study of the needs of people with dementia and their carers in the Australian Capital Territory, the importance of a complementary, socially based perspective is demonstrated. The data, from a survey and interviews, indicate that quality of life for the person with dementia and the carer is shaped by a complex of social factors. Some of these, particularly age and gender, are discussed in relation to findings in such areas as diagnosis, employment and the experience of caring. Several commonly held beliefs about ‘ideal’ carers and caregiving situations are challenged by the fin

摘要:
ABSTRACTStaying Fit and Healthy (SFH) is a centre based fitness program operating in the north‐eastern suburbs of Adelaide. SFH is targeted at older persons and encompasses introductory, continuation and remedial classes. Exercise classes are conducted by accredited fitness instructors under the direction of exercise physiologists and include exercise in water, general exercise and circuit programs.SFH is promoted in the local community through various means including letter drops, roadside signs and media publicity. Participants must complete a mandatory health questionnaire before commencement and are encouraged to visit their local doctor if unsure of their suitability to exercise. SFH has a specifically designed fee structure encouraging a commitment to activity and higher frequency attendance at exercise programs.SFH provides a significant service to many participants previously not involved in organised exercise programs. With the continued expansion of the ageing segment of our community, SFH is destined to flourish further as it fulfils a demand arising from greater awareness of the benefits of activity in our lifestyl

摘要:
ABSTRACTFrom its inception in 1909 the Australian Age Pension became well established as a social ‘right’ of citizenship over the following eight decades. Since 1988 and the Social Security Review, though, retirement incomes policy has become subject to political debate and policy turbulence. Ideally, abstract and applied policy should draw upon the lessons of history. So the perceptions of pensioner beneficiaries about the effects of pension provision on life chances are pertinent to present discussion. Such social policy story‐telling suggests that for working class seniors of the present cohort, memories of the Great Depression ameliorate any sense of present hardship, creating appreciation and acceptance of extant pension provisions. In view of the contemporary exhortations that individuals should now take full financial responsibility for their own retirement income security, the lesson that ordinary working folk cannot save an adequate retirement nest egg seems salient Furthermore, politicians' past behaviour of ‘super swindle’ seems likely to be repeated. The baby boom generation, having funded aged care in its day, can itself only anticipate a bleak future in terms of the retreat of the State from the provision of aged income
