摘要:
The knowledge and attitudes of 36 psychiatric out‐patients regarding medication were investigated by personal interview. Over 80 per cent of the variance of self‐report medication compliance was predictable from an array of socio‐economic variables and cognitive variables. Compliers and non‐compliers differed in their expectancy and prior experience of beneficial effects of the medication, and in their fear of undesirable side‐effects and the problem of addiction. Using causal modelling procedures, self‐report compliant behaviour was causally linked to favourable attitudes and fear, which in turn were linked to knowledge of name, dose, purpose, and side‐effects of the medication and the perceived stigma of the illness. Implications for patient education aimed at improving patient compliance

摘要:
Hysterics are not uncommonly believed by others to be deliberate malingerers; they may be accused of being sick for a purpose. Such an assumption has come to be considered as showing naivete on the part of the accusers from the formal psychiatric point of view. The case histories of two hysterical in‐patients who conducted themselves 'hysterically' on the ward are cited. It is a noteworthy paradox that their hysterical symptoms faded away when they were able to assume the role of a 'hysteric'. The current report explores the meaning of the diagnostic label of 'hysteria' and the possibility of taking advantage of the very fact that a 'hysteric' can develop into a 'malingerer' through therapy. The authors recommend that the diagnostic label of 'hysteria' be investigated not merely in terms of communication, but also in terms of its therapeutic functio

摘要:
There is an increasing concern in developing methods to teach communication behaviours to undergraduate medical students. A literature review revealed that there is no research on specific programmes. We hypothesized that undergraduate medical students had poor communication behaviours and would improve with specific training. To test that hypothesis 23 medical students at the University of Lagos went through a training programme in communication behaviours. There was a significant improvement in communication behaviours after training.
