AbstractIn this paper we address a series of questions concerning reproductive opportunities, kinship, dispersal, and mating patterns in free‐ranging moustached tamarin monkeys (Saguinus mystax). Between 1980 and 1990 information on group size, composition, and migration patterns was collected on marked groups of moustached tamarins inhabiting Padre Isla, an island in the Amazon Basin of northeastern Peru. In 1990, 86% of 114 animals residing in 16 social groups were trapped, examined, and released. Mean group size was 7.0, including 2.2 adult males and 2.0 adult females. None of these groups was characterized by a single adult male‐female pair. In groups with more than one adult female, only the oldest female produced offspring.An examination of dispersal patterns indicates that transfers between groups were common and fell into several categories, including immigration of individual males and females, simultaneous transfer of pairs of subadult and/or adult males (sometimes relatives) into the same social groups, and group fissioning in which males and females of the splinter group join another small social group. We have no unambiguous cases of 2 adult/subadult females migrating together into the same social group. All 6 groups for which reproductive data were available were characterized by either a polyandrous or polygynous (polygyandrous) mating pattern.The results of this study indicate that moustached tamarins reside in small multimale multifemale groups that are likely to contain both related and unrelated adult group members. Kinship and social ties among males appear to be stronger and more longlasting than kinship and social ties among females. We contend that the modal mating system of moustached and many other tamarins is not monogamous, and offer the possibility that cooperative infant care and mating system flexibility in callitrichines evolved from a polygynous mating pattern. © 1993 Wiley‐Lis

AbstractPost‐conflict reconciliatory behavior has been reported to occur with variable frequencies in different primate groups and species. Because different investigators have used different criteria to operationalize reconciliation, however, it is possible that the variation reported merely reflects different methods of study. To compare different groups and species in a meaningful way, an accurate operationalization of reconciliation is necessary. This study explores the correlation between operationally defined reconciliation (what observers recognize, such as friendly reunion) and functional reconciliation (behavior that restores a dyadic social relationship) in a group of captive long‐tailed macaques, using results from an experiment originally undertaken to demonstrate the function of friendly reunions in restoring dyadic tolerance after aggression. In dyads of unrelated animals, reunions were equally effective in restoring tolerance whether they involved body contact, overt friendly gestures, or mere proximity. Classification of post‐conflict reunions as “reconciliations” depends on comparisons with control observations; these comparisons have been carried out in several ways. Comparisons using the “n‐minute rule” missed functional reconciliations, whereas those based on the “post‐conflict/matched‐control rule” appeared to lead to more accurate classification of functional reconciliations. Post‐conflict reunions were equally effective in restoring tolerance whether they were initiated by the original aggressor or by the victim. An accurate operational definition of reconciliation, not a conservative one, is prerequisite to comparisons of the frequency of this behavior, and depends on empirical verification. AbstractMortality statistics from five populations of small New World monkeys (includinsgCallithrix jaccus, Leontopithecus rosalia, Saguinus fuscicollis, andSaguinus oedipus) were combined to generate a standard model life table reflecting the mortality patterns of these primates. AbstractWe report a change in the method of averaging parameters of the Siler mortality model fitted to a series of Old World monkey survivorship schedules. Substitution of geometric for arithmetic means of multipliers of exponential terms avoids incorrect weighting of parameters. AbstractThe present study investigated a recently developed benzodiazepine, midazolam, as an intravenous adjuvant to ketamine in infant monkeys undergoing prolonged sedation during positron emission tomography of the brain and heart. Subjects were two rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) and ten vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) ranging in age from 26 to 260 days. Midazolam was an effective intravenous adjuvant to ketamine. This treatment regime resulted in complete immobilization of the animals. Ketamine infusion rates did not vary significantly with age for either species. Sensitivity to midazolam appeared to be age‐dependent in vervets because significantly lower dose rates were sufficient to maintain anesthesia in older animals. For rhesus monkeys, midazolam dose rates decreased until approximately 4 months of age, and increased gradually thereafter. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss,
