摘要:
AbstractThe population of De Brazza's monkeys (Cercopithecus neglectus) in Kenya, East Africa, was surveyed from May to September of 1983 to estimate its numbers, distribution, and conservation status. A small number of De Brazza's monkeys are protected within Saiwa National Park; however, the vast majority of the population is endangered because they are restricted to small, isolated pockets of forests amid expanding farmland within the Trans‐Nzoia area of western Kenya. A few animals are found on the slopes of Mt. Elgon and on the Cherangani Hills, although these areas offer little protection. The pressures now facing this population are loss of habitat, reproductive isolation, and a decline in numbers as the result of being killed, either as a food source or as agricultural pests. If the current situation continues and no attempt is made to conserve the remaining De Brazza's monkeys, the species faces almost certain extinction in Keny

摘要:
AbstractObservations of social behavior in 120 pairs of rhesus macaques were organized into three matrices: male‐male interactions, female‐female interactions, and male‐female interactions. The alternating least‐squares dimensional analysis (ALSCAL‐4) was applied to each matrix to derive one‐, two‐, three‐, and four‐dimensional solutions. For each matrix, the two‐dimensional solution gave the best fit with least stress. The loadings for each category on the two dimensions were then compared with previously derived message statements for those categories and the messages were corrected as needed to conform to these analyses. For all three matrices, the two dimensions underlying social behaviors were dominance or submissiveness by the self, and a positive or negative affiliative relationship b

摘要:
AbstractReproductive records of 284 female rhesus monkeys housed in six multimale corrals at the California Primate Research Center were examined for the birth seasons 1977–1982 to determine possible associations between the probability of birth or live birth and female age, parity, origin, parturition in the previous season, infant birth date, and infant birth date in previous season. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify and quantitate the effects of factors on the probability of birth or live birth, while controlling for the possibly confounding effects of other factors in the model. Females who had infants early in the previous season were 2.5 times as likely to give birth as those who had infants late in the previous season. Females with two or three previous births were 2.1 times as likely to give birth, and those with four or five previous births were 6.7 times as likely to give birth as were females with no or one previous birth. Controlling for other factors (age, parity, and timing of birth in the previous season), corralborn females were 3.3 times as likely to give birth as either wild‐caught or domestic‐born monkeys not native to the corrals. Domestic‐born females who were not corral natives were 0.3 times as likely to have live births as wild‐caught females. Births late in the season were 1.8 times as likely to result in live infants as births early in t

摘要:
AbstractKloss's gibbons (Hylobates klossii) and Mentawai langurs (Presbytis potenziani) on Siberut Island, Indonesia, both sleep in emergent trees 34–55m tall, situated on crests and upper slopes of hills. They differ in that 91% of gibbon sleeping trees examined were free of lianas, whereas 89% of langur sleeping trees were draped with thick, woody lianas hanging from the branches to the ground. Because indigenous hunters climb lianas to shoot primates in treetops, gibbons are less susceptible than langurs to nocturnal human predation. Hence, the gibbons' preference for—and apparent control of—the limited supply of vineless trees gives them an advantage over la

摘要:
AbstractThis immunohistochemical study of luteinizing hormone‐releasing hormone (LHRH) in the olfactory bulbs in primates was undertaken in order to see whether there was an LHRH innervation in these species similar to that found in rodents. One old world (Macaca fascicularis) and two new world (Saimiri sciureusandAotus trivirgatus) monkeys were studied.Aotus trivirgatuswas of particular interest as it is noctural and so presumably more dependent upon olfactory cues. Animals were perfused with fixative, olfactory bulbs removed and sectioned, and tissues reacted immunocytochemically using LR1 (Benoit) antiserum to LHRH. Some LHRH innervation was found in the olfactory bulbs of all three species, comprising a few LHRH neurons and many fibers that ramified within the bulbs. The accessory bulb (not present as a distinct entity in old world primates) had more LHRH innervation than did the main olfactory bulb.Aotus trivirgatushad the greatest representation of LHRH of the three species. The layer of the olfactory bulb with the greatest number of LHRH fibers was the external plexiform layer. This is also true in rodents. There is evidence that LHRH has a role in the mediation of olfactory cues in reproductive behavior in rodents. It is not known how LHRH functions within the olfactory system in primates. However, the fact that it is distributed similarly in the two groups suggests that it may serve a similar functio

摘要:
AbstractDuring a long‐term study of social behavior of semifree‐ranging Barbary macaques, data on group transfer and sexual behavior were collected. A large population containing five groups living in a 14.5 ha outdoor enclosure was studied. Demographic data on the whole population are available for a period of six years. Data on sexual behavior of members of one large group were collected, by both focal animal and ad libitum techniques, for a period of two years. Matrilineal kinship relations of all except the oldest members of this intensively studied group were known. Males changed groups most frequently between the ages of three and five years i.e., the time at which sexual maturity was reached. While more than 30% of all males three years old and older changed groups during the study period, many males remained members of their natal group even after reaching adulthood. However, sexual interactions, especially matings between close matrilineal relatives, were found to be almost absent, suggesting that Barbary macaques are not highly inbred as formerly suppo
