摘要:

The use of monoclonal antibodies against human tumor cells is a theoretically highly attractive approach to cancer therapy. And technologically, the capability seems to be available. Problems such as defining the optimum antigens—and their antibodies—are currently being investigated intensively. Progress in this research and its clinical significance are reviewed.

The advances in bone marrow transplantation that have been incorporated into standard practice in treatment of several types of leukemia have been remarkable, although transplantation is still accompanied by a multitude of risks and complications. Refinements under investigation hold promise of long-term survival for many patients whose disease is now considered fatal.

The membrane skeleton is the critical intermediary at the interface between the cell membrane and the cytoplasm. A detailed understanding of the structure, function, and abnormalities of the red cell's skeletal system will provide valuable insight into the biology of normal red cell function and the pathology of the hemolytic anemias.
