Retinoids—vitamin A and its analogues—have been recognized for more than half a century to be potent agents in the control of cellular differentiation and proliferation. Only recently, however, have there been concerted efforts to exploit this observation, with particular emphasis on cancer prevention. Experimental findings of tumor inhibition and suppression are reviewed.

Most autoimmune diseases are responsive to corticosteroids administered in dosages sufficient to shut off the inflammatoiy process. The protocol outlined suppresses the most severe manifestations while minimizing toxic drug effects.

Open-angle glaucoma Is not a benign disease; untreated, it can lead to total blindness. If intraocular tension is controlled early, before onset of visual field loss or optic nerve degeneration, the prognosis is good.

When recombinant DNA technology made possible the synthesis of mammalian proteins in unlimited quantities, human growth hormone was an obvious candidate. The refined synthetic product is now being tested in children with somatotropin deficiency, with early indications of efficacy and safety. Future research may point to other therapeutic uses of synthetic hGH.

Altered loading conditions can sometimes produce serious heart failure, even though myocardial contractility is not depressed. The role of afterload in some forms of heart failure is emphasized, as are the conditions termed afterload mismatch, in which afterload is excessive“absolutely”or relative to diminished contractility. A related aspect is the role of the peripheral circulation.
