Formerly mislabeled“rheumatoid variants,”these disorders actually have little in common with rheumatoid arthritis. The HLA-B27antigen seems to play an important role in pathogenesis of these inflammations of joints deep in the axial skeleton.

As a cause of urethritis, acute epididymitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and their complications,Chlamydia trachomatisis rapidly outstrippingN. gonorrhoeae.Signs and symptoms of chlamydial infections resemble those of gonorrhea, and colnfection is common, but treatment maybe appropriate for gonococci but not chlamydiae. Guidelines are offered for diagnosis and effective treatment.

Alcohol has been a suspected teratogen for centuries, but only recently has a relationship been recognized between maternal alcohol intake and the characteristic pattern of malformations in the fetus. The offspring of chronically alcoholic women are at highest risk, but clinical studies show that even moderate drinking during the first few weeks of pregnancy can adversely affect fetal development.
