It has long been appreciated that the adrenocortical response to stress is mediated via the central nervous system. The isolation of corticotropin releasing hormone in 1981 provided an important“missing link”to the CNS, but many puzzling questions remain. Current areas of interest include the associations between the stress-response and immune-response systems.

摘要:

Barriers between the male's immune system and his germ cells have been presumed. However, they turn out to be imperfect, which suggests that autoimmune attack may be prevented in part by chronic exposure of T lymphocytes to tolerogenic doses of“foreign”germ cell antigens. Breakdowns in such active immunoregulation may account for some cases of unexplained infertility.

For all the high-tech,“high-science”diagnostic methods we increasingly rely on, we are not dealing with biotechnology per se but with its impact on human beings. The breakthroughs in genetic diagnosis are providing us with far more information than we could have dreamed of even 30 years ago, but the problem of how best to use that information remains difficult and elusive.
