Experimental evidence suggests that interplay between prostaglandins and both the renin-angiotensin and kallikrein-kinin systems may figure in normal blood pressure regulation. If, as seems reasonable, some forms of chronic hypertension can be explained by prostaglandin deficiency, eventually antihypertensive therapy might entail measures to enhance prostaglandin synthesis or impede enzymatic degradation.

Two widely prescribed drugs noted for a relative lack of adverse effects do occasionally cause hepatitis, which may be fatal. A prodromal period marked by malaise, fatigue, and anorexia almost always precedes the appearance of jaundice; if the drug is stopped promptly, a serious outcome can be avoided. Alertness to the prodrome by patient and physician is thus the key to prevention or management of this complication.

Until recently the concept that ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, and other“rheumatoid variants”might share a common etiology was based on their sharing inflammation sites and seronegativity for rheumatoid factor and, often, their occurrence in the same patients. Their sharing of strong positivity for W27 now adds support to the concept; the mechanism may be a postinfective, chronic autoimmune response.
