Anemia is“one of the most commonly mishandled conditions in the entire catalogue of pathology.”Errors range from failure to provide needed treatment to intensive therapy for hematologically healthy patients. The article focuses on efforts to accurately define anemia and on the sine qua non of effective management—correlating manifestations with the diverse pathophysiologies.

Even advanced imaging modalities are generally not sensitive enough to detect early tumors—with the notable exception of mammography for breast cancer screening. For the most part, imaging studies are more valuable for tumor staging and treatment planning. The advantages of different techniques in different sites are discussed, with emphasis on CT capability.

The modern era of diuretic therapy has witnessed revolutionary improvement in our ability to manage disorders characterized by abnormal fluid retention. With the advent of agents that differ in mechanism and potency, treatment can be tailored more precisely to each patient's clinical condition. The proper use of diuretics in the context of congestive heart failure is discussed.
