The following editorial, by Sir Peter B. Medawar, addresses itself to the current debate among scientists—natural and social—on the advisability, or perhaps even the permissibility, of research involving recombinant DNA, or as it is sometimes described, the transplantation of genes from one species to another. This debate was recently put into sharp focus by the Federation of American Scientists in the April 1976 issue ofFAS Public Interest Report.To provide background, an excerpt from that publication appears immediately following the editorial. Dr. Medawar, who received the Nobel Prize for the discovery of acquired immunologic tolerance, is at the Medical Research Council's Clinical Research Centre, Harrow, England.—ED.

If the goal of treatment is healing of the ulcer, then success is usually achieved—repeatedly. In order to avoid recurring episodes, it is essential that both the physician and the patient learn to regard the ulcer as the result of a chronic disease process. This means that management becomes a lifelong undertaking, with antacids and meals used according to schedules that keep gastric pH above ulcerogenic levels.

Apparently some children are predisposed from birth to this infectious condition. Pneumatic otoscopy and impedance audiometry can be important in diagnosis. Optimal therapy for acute and chronic infections is outlined.
