SUMMARYThe antialgal activity of a number of simple phenols was examined for their effect on the growth of 7 species of unicellular marine algae. The 3 knoiun algal phenols, 5‐bromo‐3,4‐dihydroxybenzaldehyde; 2,3‐dibromo‐4,5‐dihydroxybenzylalcohol, and 3,4‐dihy‐droxyphenylethylamine, were highly toxic as were otherorthodihydroxy compounds. Monohydroxy compounds were notably less toxic.Skeletonema costatumandOlisthodiscussp. were the most sensitive organisms examined andDunaliella tertiolectawas the most resistant. SUMMARYCytological changes induced by nitrate or phosphate limitation were reproducible and readily visible by phase contrast microscopy inCoscinodiscus wailesii, Ditylum brightwellii, Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semi‐spina, Skeletonema costatum,andStephanopyxis turris.These effects included changes in chromatophore number and shape, pyrenoid location, and mitochondrial abundance and appearance. InS. costatum,a diatom containing only 1 chromatophore, only nitrogen‐deficient cells could be recognized. Silicate deficiency prevented cell division almost entirely. When a few cells did divide in the presence of low silicate, abnormalities in valve structure occurred in some cells. Cytological differences with N and P deficiency may permit a rough assessment of the physiological condition of the same or similar species in natural diatom communit

SUMMARYMethods have been presented for isolation, partial purification, and characterization of DNA from a 7‐chromosome strain ofAstrephomene gubernaculilera.Sheath material surrounding the individual cells was removed enzymatically and cells were lysed with hot Na lanryl sulfate. DNA was isolated and purified by a modification of Marmufs procedure. Melting experiments and buoyant‐density values indicated that native DNA with a G‐C content of 61‐62% had been prepared. 摘要:
SUMMARYLiagorophila,a monotypic genus in the Acrochaetiaceae (Nemalionales) from the zuestern Pacific, is redescribed, particularly with reference to its sexual reproductive structures. The fertilized carpogonium shows a longitudinal first division; the spermatangia may be borne directly on a normal vegetative cell. Monosporangia are not known. For these reasons, and although vegetatively resembling some species ofAcrochaetium,the genus should be recognized as distinct from other genera of Acrochaetiaceae.

SUMMARYGametes ofVolvulina steiniibear near‐apical mating papillae. Zygospore germination yields a single biflagellate cell that develops into a colony xuhose asexual progeny are all of the same mating type. Backcrossing of clones of progeny indicated a 1 :1 ratio of mating types among the progeny.Of 20 clones from a number of localities, none was homothallic and 3 showed no matins: reaction. Mating reactions of clones crossed in all possible combinations indicated the presence of 2 sexually isolated groups of clones producing smooth‐walled zygospores and 1 group that produced spiny‐walled zygospores. In the latter group weak and nonreciprocal mating reactions occurred in some clone combinations. Failure of germination of spiny‐walled zygospores from certain crosses suggests further subdivision into genetically isolated

SUMMARYA boron requirement has been shown for 12 species of marine pennate diatoms, 4 species of marine centric diatoms, and S freshwater diatom species. It can be concluded that boron is essential for the growth of most, probably all, diatoms. It is much easier to demonstrate a requirement for the marine species than for the freshwater species. Some species of marine algal flagellates also require boron for growth; others apparently do not.
