AbstractThis paper develops the theory of a recently introduced computational method for molecular dynamics. The method in question uses the backward‐Euler method to solve the classical Langevin equations of a molecular system. Parameters are chosen to produce a cutoff frequency ωc, which may be set equal tokT/hto simulate quantum‐mechanical effects. In the present paper, an ensemble of identical Hamiltonian systems modeled by the backward‐Euler/Langevin method is considered, an integral equation for the equilibrium phase‐space density is derived, and an asymptotic analysis of that integral equation in the limit Δt→ 0 is performed. The result of this asymptotic analysis is a second‐order partial differential equation for the equilibrium phase‐space density expressed as a function of the constants of the motion. AbstractThe effective conductivity σ* of a multicomponent composite material is considered. Integral representations for σ* treated as a holomorphic function on a polydisk with values in a half‐plane are analyzed. A representation for σ* is introduced which is symmetric in the component conductivities and for which the moments of the positive measure in the integral are directly related to the coefficients in a perturbation expansion of σ* around a homogeneous medium. AbstractIn [4], we treated the problem of passage through a discrete‐time clock‐regulated multistage queueing network by modeling the input time series {an} to each queue as a Markov chain. We showed how to transform probability transition information from the input of one queue to the input of the next in order to predict mean queue length at each stage. The Markov approximation is very good forp=E(an) ≦ ½, which is in fact the range of practical utility. Here we carry out a Markov time series input analysis to predict the stage to stage change in the probability distribution of queue length.
