We consider the problem of deciding which of a set of p independent variables x1X2J xswe are to regard as being functionally involved in the mean of a dependent normal random variable Y and estimating E( Y) in terms of the chosen x's. This mean is an unknown function (assumed to be doubly differentiable) of some or all of the x's, so that the problem is of wide relevance. A stepwise procedure is proposed for the selection of nonlinear regression models which, in some sense, compromises between the sum of squared residuals and the parameter dimension, trying to keep this dimension as low as possible. The procedure is based on asymptotic results. For the case of univariate regressin, a computer programme has been implemented. The problem of choosing the class of admitted models is also discussed

摘要:
The residual sum of squares, the jackknifed residual sum and the cross-valida-tory assessment are considered as estimators of the error variance in the nonlinear regression model. On the basis of their asymptotic expansions a third order asymptotic comparison is performed with respect to the median bias and the probability of concentration around the true value. In this sense least squares and jackknifing turn out to be preferably against cross-validation.

We present an estimator for the vector p of cell probabilities in a k-dimensional contingency table, which is based on smoothing an estimate of the vector q describing the interpendences, while estimating the one-dimensional marginal distributions by the observed frequencies. The background for this estimator is the realistic situation, in which no reliable prior information is available on the structure of the contingency table or the corresponding probabilities and there is at most the hope, that the q values at neighbouring.
