摘要:
Associated with the North Macquarie Ridge is a positive total magnetic force anomaly, of 500–600 gammas amplitude and between 5 and 30 kilometres in width. The course of this anomaly is traced from Lat. 51° S, Long. 163° E, for a distance of 500 km north-north-east to Preservation Inlet, New Zealand, where measurements cease. A subsidiary positive anomaly appears to be associated with the west flank of the So lander Trough. The magnetic anomaly associated with the North Macquarie Ridge is related to other geophysical features of south-west New Zealand.

Tphases ongmating in a number of regions are recorded at Macquarie Island, in particular from near Macquarie Island itself, and the South Pacific Cordillera. Shocks from these two regions originate on mid-ocean ridges, where geometry does not seem to favour the hypothesis of a multiple reflection origin ofT, in its present form. A fewTphases from shocks near Easter Island, and on the South American continental edge, are also recorded. The average velocity of all the phases is 1.470 km/s, with no significant variation attributable to differences in water temperature among the paths. Land path is sufficiently small in all cases to introduce negligible error to this figure, and to prevent any estimate of the mode of propagation of the phase through land. Reflections of theTphase are observed from the edge of the Campbell Plateau.

摘要:
A study ofT-phases on Tasmanian seismograms has shown that there is a precise regional distribution of earthquakes from which theT-phase is recorded in Tasmania. Factors that influence these recordings appear to be: (1) the effect of bathymetry on the So far channel; (2) the length of the land path before energy injection into the Sofar channel; (3) efficiency of energy injection into the channel; and (4) diffraction ofT-waves around submarine ridges. At the Tasmanian continental margin, the energy is converted into P-wave form which is propagated across Tasmania with velocity 5.9 km per sec and recorded at the stations of the Tasmania University Seismic Net.

A comparison is made with earlier results and a value for the westward drift of the field pattern since 1959 is obtained.

摘要:
The natural remanence of 126 samples of igneous and sedimentary rock is studied. The remanence of the sedimentary rocks is found unsuitable for interpreting in terms of ancient geomagnetic field directions. Samples of igneous rock are found to be of varying stability but clearly merit further study, if more samples could be obtained, as such data would be of direct relevance to stratigraphic correlation and the tectonic history of this region.

Results of age determinations made on rocks from Viti Levu are discussed in relation to ages determined paleontologically. Rocks of the Tholo Plutonic Suite appear to have been emplaced in at least two distinct episodes, one possibly ranging from 50 to 30 million years (m.y.), the other accompanying the folding of the Wainimala Group rocks at about 10 m.y. Evidence is given that the Tertiary ƒ stage (Indonesian scale) may have continued to less than 10 m.y. ago in the Fiji region. Two samples from the Tavua volcanic centre (Mba Basaltic Group) suggest that volcanic activity began there before 10 m.y.; products were mostly basaltic but trachyandesite was also produced. The last activity, ranging from eruption of basalt and trachybasalt to intrusion of trachyandesite and monzonite, took place 4 to 5 m.y. ago. A suggested relationship between the products of this volcano and rocks of the Koroimavua Andesitic Group dated at about 5 m.y. is illustrated. The large monzonite sill in the interior of Viti Levu was dated at 4.7 m.y.

A geological map of Viti Levu (scale 1 : 500,000) is presented, using a revised terminology with all units based on lithology and field relationships. The Wainimala Group, ranging from Eocene to about Middle Miocene, with a possible break in deposition of the Oligocene, was intruded by rocks of the Tholo Plutonic Suite, apparently in at least two periods. The Savura Volcanic Group and the Singatoka Sedimentary Group are mid-Miocene. The aforementioned rocks are covered by Mio-Pliocene sedimentary rocks with some andesite, classified as the Ra, Nandi, and Navoso Sedimentary Groups, and the Mendrausuthu Andesitic Group. Later rocks constitute the Koroimavua Andesitic Group, Mba Basaltic Group, and Thuvu and Verata Sedimentary Groups, which are Pliocene, with possibly some Pleistocene strata. Young intrusive rocks are mostly plugs and stocks associated with volcanic centres. A bibliography of geology of Fiji is given as an appendix.
