A system of photo survey points established on Mount Ruapehu, near the centre of the North Island, New Zealand, is described. Panoramas will be photographed annually from these points to record autumn changes in the glaciers and the winter snow cover on the ski fields.

Dune sands with four different stages of soil development cover 330 square miles in the coastal Manawatu district. The oldest—the Koputaroa Phase—is restricted to small areas at the north and south; the other three phases—the Foxton, Motuiti, and Waitarere—form belts parallel to the coast, the oldest belt being the furthest inland. The Koputaroa Phase is considered to be Late Pleistocene or early Holocene and 20,000 to 10,000 years old. The Foxton Phase is older than the eruption of the Taupo Shower and about 4,000 to 2,000 years old. Sands of the Motuiti Phase overlie traces of Maori occupation and a stump that is about 750 years old, and are about 1,000 to 500 years old. The Waitarere Phase started about 100 years ago and is still accumulating.

Of the three main fans of the Waimakariri sector of the Canterbury Plain, underlain respectively by the Burnham Formation, the Springston Formation, and young Postglacial gravel, only the oldest (Burnham) is now thought to be of glacial origin. The Springston Formation, previously thought to be glacial, is interpreted as an aggradation deposit consequent upon rising Postglacial sea level. The young Postglacial fan of the Waimakariri River is the result of subsequent progradation of the coast north of Banks Peninsula.

Kairimu cave was formed in a 30 ft band of Lower Oligocene limestone, the drainage system being determined mainly by a shallow syncline in the limestone. Development of the two largest and oldest passages was initiated under phreatic conditions after uplift in Late Miocene time, but the main episode of cave formation was controlled by vadose conditions. During Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene high-sea-level regimes the cave was flooded and filled in with silt and clay. This history is suggested by the height of the cave entrance above sea level (350 ft) and was confirmed by microfloral age determinations of the clay fill. Several smaller passages were formed later.
