摘要:
Examination of the density variations found in cores taken from wildcat wells highlights the differences in Tertiary sedimentation on the east and west coasts of the North Island of New Zealand. A number of measurements of density, magnetic susceptibility, and longitudinal wave velocity have been made on East Coast rock outcrops. The results, although far from comprehensive, reveal some new and interesting trends. Comparisons of New Zealand seismic measurements and North American oil-well data throw new light on the rock-forming processes of diagenesis and burial metamorphism and allow comparisons to be made of the differences in tectonic environment between New Zealand and North America.

摘要:
On Black Island and Brown Peninsula a sequence of moraine deposits and topographic benches is interpreted as reflecting four cycles of alternating climate. The previously described glacio-marine Scallop Hill Formation is related to the second of the climatic cycles, the Taylor Formation to the fourth. Erratic boulders of marine Tertiary sediments previously reported from McMurdo Sound are confined to the moraine of the third cycle. Benches may have been formed by earlier ice shelves like the present Ross Ice Shelf, and have been raised by progressive differential uplift.

摘要:
For successful seismic crustal refraction work, a reliable, robust, and portable recording system capable of detecting ground movements of 10−3m sec−1at 1 Hz is necessary. The miniature preamplifier described in this paper, accepts microvolt signals directly from the seismometer and by using integrated circuits it has been made small enough to fit within the seismometer case. The preamplifier has a low impedance and differential output. The signal is fed via a shielded landline to the main amplifier which also has a differential input. The use of differential output for the preamplifier and differential input for the main amplifier, interconnected by a shielded line, assures a high degree of noise immunity for the system. The main amplifier also has differential output for feeding a suitable recorder such as the Brush 220 or San'ei Visigrsph. Integrated circuits are also used in the construction of the main amplifiers. Accurate standard time is vital for the success of crustal refraction work and the circuit of a digital clock (1 Hz-1 MHz) with direct drive capability and an accuracy of better than 1 sec/day is given. Power for the entire system is supplied by a 12 V accumulator; the total current drain is 8 mA for the amplifier and 300 mA for the clock.

摘要:
Ash beds of rhyolitic composition older than the Rerewhakaaitu Ash are described (in order of increasing age) for the central North Island of New Zealand. For convenience the ash beds down to the Rerewhakaaitu Ash (c. 14,700 yr B.P.) are included in the Holocene and the older ash beds (Okareka, Te Rere, Oruanui, Mangaonjf and Rotoehu) are referred to the late Pleistocene, the age of Rotoehu Ash being greater than c. 41,000 yr B.P.
