摘要:
Time series analyses are carried out on earthquake data from the main seismic region of New Zealand for the years 1942–61. Origin times only are considered, the energies and exact positions of the shocks being largely ignored. The relevant statistical theory for the first and second order properties of the process is described, and simple probability models for earthquake occurrence are put forward. On the basis of these results, the data are examined for periodic and grouping effects. No significant periodic effects are found, either among the shallow shocks (depths up to 100 km) or among the deep shocks (depths 100 km or greater). Both components show strong evidence of grouping, and several alternative models to describe this effect are put forward and compared.

摘要:
Breccias from 40 localities in the Tokatoka district, Northland, are either clastic dikes or tuff-breccias of the Navajo type. The tuff-breccias form dikes and plugs which cut Cretaceous to Eocene argillaceous limestones and are themselves commonly intruded by basalt dikes. The tuff-breccias are composed dominantly of fragmented basalt similar to that of the associated basalt dikes, and minor sedimentary and andesitic debris. The Tokatoka examples are compared with a schematic section through a Navajo tuff-breccia pipe.

摘要:
Part IThe geological setting of the lode is briefly described. It consists of thin irregular concordant bands of a variable pyrite-pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite assemblage, with minor sphalerite, in greenschist. Textural relationships are described and the paragenesis and origin of the sulphides briefly discussed. Sulphides in a greenschist band near Queenstown are described for comparison.

摘要:
Navarino Island is composed mainly of a sequence of geosynclinal sediments—the Yahgan Formation—at least 3,000 metres thick and of probable Early Cretaceous age. The main sediments are greywackes, argillites, and cherts. Calcareous concretions are characteristic of some horizons but are nowhere abundant. Many coarser-grained sediments contain abundant andesitic to basaltic debris, indicating widespread contemporaneous volcanic activity. Fossils are rare and comprise poorly preserved Radiolaria, fragmentary plant remains, and imprints ofInoceramus. Recrystallisation is evident in many rocks; in particular, secondary prehnite is characteristic, especially in the coarser sediments. The formation includes several thick quartz dolerite sills. The largest of these forms a conspicuous east-west chain of serrated peaks, the so-called Dientes de Navarino. The south-west part of the island and the nearby Bertrand Island are composed of altered basic igneous rocks, believed to be contemporaneous with the Yahgan Formation sediments.
