摘要:
A sequence of over 80 earthquakes occurred in 1962 off the coast near Westport, New Zealand. The first and largest shock took place on May 10 and had a magnitude of 5.9; the next largest, on May 17, had a magnitude of 5.6. The epicentres of these two earthquakes have been accurately determined from readings at local seismograph stations; the strong crustal phases, felt effects, and arrival times of phases at overseas stations all show that the foci were shallow. Late arrivals at Australian stations indicate a lower velocity in the upper mantle beneath the Tasman Sea than is implied by the Jeffreys—Bullen Tables.

摘要:
In the field of paleoecology, Lyell's uniformitarian principle asserts that the ecological response of species does not change through their histories. Practical and philosophical implications of this notion are examined, and it is argued that justification for its application in research depends on the kind of information sought by paleoecologists.

摘要:
In a temperate pluvial climate, under conditions that favour episodic or seasonal high run-off though the annual rainfall is moderate, fine-textured relief (with high drainage density) may develop rapidly (feral at first, to become subdued later) as a result of first-cycle dissection of tectonic slopes or redissection of slopes that have been smoothed by the activities of frost in a glacial age. Under similar temperate pluvial conditions such textures may, however, develop also, though probably more slowly, in landscapes that have long ago become fully mature and even subdued, including some that have been subject to slow downwasting of the surface during a state of dynamic equilibrium. This change to fine texture and high drainage density may be brought about by a change in rainfall characteristics to those favouring high run-off, either epiwdic or seasonal (though a similar change may be attributable in some regions to the more pluvial conditions wming on in glacial ages). The reverse change, to coarser texture, if it comes about at all as a result of climatic changes in the reverse direction, must be much slower. Thus, at any rate in a region like New Zealand with a fast tempo of trosion, fine land'lape texture tends to prevail, but this is probably in some cases relict from a former climate.

摘要:
Twenty-six planktonic species have been recognised in a preliminary survey of surface sediment samples, mainly foraminiferal oozes, from the New Zealand sector (latitudes 18°–54°S) of the south-west Pacific Ocean. The following general trends in the distribution of the Foraminifera were noted: (a) the number of species decreased from a maximum of 23 at the northernmost stations to (j species at the southern limit of the area, and (b) many of the species showed a latitudinal distribution, primarily related to the hydrological conditions (mainly temperature) of the surface waters. The species with restricted latitudinal distribution are those with a limited temperature range: those with a cosmopolitan distribution have a wider temperature tolerance. Species in the former group are mainly warm-water forms restricted to the lower latitudes. Some of the more cosmopolitan species also tend to show latitudinal variation, with the greatest abundance in the faunas of the middle and higher latitudes.

摘要:
A revision of reserves in part of the Greymouth Coalfield, on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, is presented, based on recent drilling and prospecting. Reserves have been calculated for three different groups of coal, and are summarised as follows: coal with swelling numbers of 9 and 9+ (suitable for gas making), 494,000 tons measured, 4,146,000 tons indicated, 4,960,000 tons inferred; coal with swelling numbers 9+ + and 9+ + + (suitable for metallurgical coke), 424,000 tons measured, 70,000 tons indicated, 16,700,000 tons inferred; coal with inconsistent swelling numbers from 1 to 9+, 382,000 tons indicated. Reserves in areas of coal belonging to more than one of these groups amount to 130,000 tons measured, 490,000 tons indicated, and 1,653,000 tons inferred.

摘要:
An analysis is made of the occurrence of high sea levels at Bluff from records of the high tides (52 in all) that exceeded an arbitrary level during a period of nearly 6 years from 1951 to 1956. The high sea levels usually occurred at times of low atmospheric pressure. but in most cases the recorded level exceeded the predicted level by an amount which was one to two times the head of water corresponding to the deficiency in atmospheric pressure below a mean value. This behaviour is ascribed to the effect of wind.

摘要:
Equations for determining the direction and magnitude of the hydraulic gradient of ground-water flow were deduced using water levels of three wells in static condition. By means of these equations the ground-water movements for the past twenty years in the farm area of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, w,ere traced, and they are discussed in relation to the soil condition and drainage requirements.

摘要:
Local deepening of the thalweg (colk formation) on one or both sides of constrictions in tidal channels is described in Brisbane Water (New South Wales), Port Phillip (Victoria), and Otago Harbour (New Zealand). Since channel deepening at the site of the restriction has already been described by Suess (1906) and the term “scape colk” introduced to designate it, it is suggested that the excavations in the expanded channel described in this paper should be termed “scour colks”. The mechanism of colk formation has important applications in harbour engineering, and further studies are desirable preferably by means of hydraulic models.
