摘要:
Sir Charles Cotton's achievement might well be left to speak for itself, as may be confirmed from the Bibliography that follows this section. Yet it may not be thought out of place to record here some previously unpublished comments and some perhaps little known facts concerning his career that may indicate something of Cotton's place in earth science in New Zealand and in geomorphology in particular. In addition, there are reproduced a few typical extracts from reviews of his works by well known overseas geologists and geomorphologists; some tributes from his colleagues and admirers in Belgium, France, Russia, and Japan; and some examples of his widely praised landscape sketches and block diagrams.

摘要:
Sir Charles Cotton has published his contributions to science in many forms—notes, reviews, articles, and books—and in many media in various countries in the world. He has, for example, had papers published in scientific journals and Congress proceedings in New Zealand, Australia, England, Scotland, the United States, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Colombia; and his books have been published in New Zealand, Great Britain, and the United States.

摘要:
There has been transcurrent displacement along the major fault zone in south-western Japan known as the Median (tectonic) line, despite the former consensus of opinion that only dip-slip displacements have occurred in this zone.

摘要:
Grain-size parameters and mineralogy of 30 sand samples from Farewell Spit have been studied. The foreshore, backshore, and dune environments have distinctive means, sorting, skewness, percentages of heavy minerals, and distribution of selected mineral species. Grain-size parameters and mineralogy indicate that sand is eroded from the north side of the spit and carried southwards by the wind. Mineral distribution may reflect the importance of grain shape during the erosion of sand by wind.

摘要:
Observations of the wave conditions around the Otago Peninsula were made during the period December 1963 to December 1964. From these observations the influence of sea and swell waves in developing the beaches and spits of this part of the Otago coastline has been assessed. The beaches, including the “southward”-pointing spits of the peninsula, have developed largely in response to a dominant southerly swell of of 10–15 sec. period, in spite of intense refraction. North of the peninsula, in an area sheltered from the swell, the dominant waves are produced by the north-easterly sea, which promotes some beach drift from north to south. The energy dominant waves and the evolution of shoreline curves on a coast of submergence are discussed.

摘要:
In the area along the northern flank of the Mount Hutt Range, Canterbury, deposition of alluvial fans is initiated in three ways: the sudden release of large quantities of sediment from nthe stream headwaters, the truncation of earlier formed fans, and erosion at the fan apex in the course of the normal cycle of erosion.

摘要:
Tectonic depressions or compressive upbulges have developed at most bends in the Hope Fault, a major Pleistocene transcurrent fault in North Canterbury. The topographic expression of the depressions can be used to give otherwise unobtainable information about fault geometry and movement.

摘要:
Explorations of the structure of the piles of sediment underlying parts of the continental shelf, or terrace, have confirm the theory that in general this ubiquitous feature has been formed by up- and out-growth due to the deposition on the shelf (as topsets beds) and on the continental slope (as foreset beds) during a prolonged movement of either continous or intermittent submergence.
