摘要:
As one who studied geology at Canterbury College initially under Professor Robert Speight, I was associated with Professor R. S. Allan only during his settling-in period. Thus later students are better qualified to assess Allan's contribution to the science of geology and to the life of the University.

摘要:
“Throughout its not uneventful history, and in spite of its vicissitudes, the [Canterbury] Museum has always inspired the loyalty of small groups of right-minded men and women. To these ... the ideals and aspirations for which the Museum stood, were worthy of support. To them the Museum was a source of enrichment of life; a means by which their cultural background was heightened in value and extended in scope.”

摘要:
In the “Bibliography of New Zealand Geology to 1950” to be published shortly asN.Z. Geological Survey Bulletin 65, there are 45 entries under the name of R. S. Allan. A few only of these are repeated here, under the heading “Selected Geological Publications to 1950”. Allan's geological publications since 1950 and his publications on a variety of other subjects (including the philosophy and administration of science, psychology, and the growing of alpine plants) are listed below under a rough classification. The breadth of his scientific interests is evident, and there also emerges clearly a picture of the amount of time and effort he put into his work not only for the University but also for the Royal Society of New Zealand, the Pacific Science Association, and the Canterbury Museum. His painstaking work as a bibliographer is acknowledged by the inclusion of a separate section listing some of his useful compilations in this field.

摘要:
The name “Murihiku Supergroup” is proposed for those rocks, in general of older Mesozoic age, which overlie the Permian Bryneira, Productus Creek, Arthurton, and Kuriwao Groups in the Southland Syncline and underlie the erosion surface on which Cretaceous and Tertiary beds were deposited with major unconformity. North Etal and Taringatura Groups are introduced; North Range and Wairuna Peak Groups are given formal status. All are included in the Murihiku Supergroup.

摘要:
The span of conceivable past time increased explosively when artificial mental restraints were removed less than 200 years ago. Unfortunately, doctrines and practices of stratigraphy were already established before emancipation. Perhaps for this reason, time has tended to take an inferior place in philosophical discussions of the time-rock relationship, and weaknesses and fallacies have been less easily perceived. Though the formation of any sequence of strata obviously occupied some finite span of time, it does not follow in reverse that the total span of continuous past time can properly be classified or subdivided into arbitrary intervals defined by selected separate rock sequences. The validity of the type section and the usefulness of the time-stratigraphic unit are therefore held in doubt. On the other hand, the concepts of “biochron” and “zone” as used in one sense offer a sound basis for geological age-measurement and a means for referring geological age to radiometrically determined points on the continuous secular time scale. It is predicted that the traditional geological time divisions will be retained in use along with the secular time scale, but will eventually be redefined in terms of the latter.

摘要:
Aspects of marine level-bottom communities are considered. Studies of entire fossil benthic assemblages and fossil level-bottom communities will make major contributions to some important biological problems and aid paleoecological and paleozoogeographic interpretations. At present these interpretations are hampered by a lack of detailed data on the ecology and distributional patterns of living species, difficulties in the interpretation of numerical counts made on fossil assemblages, and an inadequate knowledge of the mechanisms and effects of transportation on the continental shelf.

摘要:
In the circum-Pacific region 29 homotaxial datum planes have been chosen from the ranges of the Tertiary planktonic Foraminifera. Correlation of the datum planes is mainly dependent on the original geographic distribution of the species, the preservation of the fossils, and the accuracy of published information.

摘要:
Cassidaria sulcataHutton, briefly described in 1873 from the Pliocene of Kaniere, New Zealand, is redescribed from the holotype and topotypes and attributed to the genusGaleoocorysKuroda and Habe. Related forms are recorded from the Kapitean Stage (uppermost Miocene) of the same Westland district, and one is described asG. allanin.sp. LivingGaleoocorysinhabit archibenthal and abyssal seas, but the New Zealand fossil species apparently lived at considerably shallower depths.
