摘要:
When I joined the Geological Survey in May 1920, it was a small organisation with a staff of seven geologists, a draughtsman and a clerk. They were: P. G. Morgan, Director; J. Henderson, Mining Geologist; M. Ongley, H. T. Ferrar, Geologists; L. I. Grange, E. O. Macpherson, and J. Marwick, Assistant Geologists; H. E. Harris, draughtsman; and F. Fulton-Wood, clerk. Ferrar, Grange and Macpherson had only recently been appointed, after the First World War. The office was at 38 Wellington Terrace, in an old wooden house set back about 40 ft from the street with a sloping lawn in front. It was quite a good place to work in, with reasonable space at the time, relatively quiet for the middle of a city, only a block to the old Dominion Museum, and handy to Lambton Railway Station for us Lower Hutt dwellers. Also, importantly, it was close to the Lambton Quay-Willis Street window-shopping round during the lunch hour stroll.

摘要:
No two names are more nearly synonymous with New Zealand Tertiary paleontology than John Marwick and Harold John Finlay. Both men established individual reputations in their own fields: Marwick in molluscan paleontology and biostratigraphy, Finlay in Mollusca and foraminiferal biostratigraphy. Yet it is essentially because of their joint work that Finlay and Marwick have left their most lasting impression on New Zealand Tertiary geology.

摘要:
Study of Jarge collections has enabled reassessment of the fauna of the Te Piki Bed, of mid Pleistocene Castlecliffian age, from near Cape Runaway. Descriptions of 13 new species and one new subspecies of gastropod and a new species of the chitonCryptoconchusare presented;Nozeba micaFinlay 1930,Sigapatella inflata(Hutton 1883),Penion editus(Powell 1934),Buccinulum (Evamula) gracillimumPowell 1934, andChemnitzia kingiLaws 1937 are suppressed as junior synonyms; a brachio-pod, two bivalve species and eight species of gastropod are recorded fossil for the first time; and in a discussion of certain rissoacean groups the generaAustrorissopsisPonder 1965,FictonobaPonder 1967,MicrodryasLaseron 1950, andNanadomaLaseron 1956, as well as the cerithiaceanJoculatorHedley 1909, are seen to be represented in the New Zealand fossil fauna, andEpigrusHedley 1903 is removed from the list of neozelanic genera. Taxonomic notes are provided on various other taxa, including accounts of intraspecific variation in three species of Acteonidae andOdostomia turneri.

摘要:
Usages of Hutchinsonian, Awamoan and Altonian Stages are traced. The validity of foraminiferal criteria for the stages is reviewed. Those for the Hutchinsonian: Awamoan and Awamoan:Altonian boundaries appear to be unsatisfactory when compared with trends inHaeuslerellaandGlobigerinoides. There is partial overlap amongst name bearers for the stages. Proposals to emend the classification will be made in a subsequent paper.

摘要:
Biostratigraphic zones other than assemblage zones are absolutely defined by and tied to the taxonomic concepts of their index fossils. They cannot, therefore, be defined by reference to sequences of strata in that they are only as stable as the taxonomy of the zonal fossils.
