摘要:
The history of the Waitotaran and Nukumaruan Stages (including the Waipipian and Mangapanian, Hautawan and Marahauan Substages) is described, The difficulty of applying the Lower Nukumaruan (Hautawan) substage concept is illustrated with reference to sections in the Wanganui and Te Aute Subdivisions, The origin of the term “lower Nukumaruan”, which was first applied to theChlamys delicatulabeds of Tahoraiti Survey District, southern part of Dannevirke Subdivision, is then examined more closely. Utilising evolutionary stages ofPhialopectenandPelicariafor correlating the Taohoraiti sequence with those in the Te Aute Subdivision and on the Wanganui coast, the type locality of the Waitotaran and Nukumaruan Stages, the writer concludes that the so-called Lower Nukumaruan beds of Tahoraiti are largely Upper Waitotaran beds that happen to containChlamys delicatulaand associated species, whose distribution is inferred to have been climatically controlled and geographically limited to regions under the influence of subantarctic waters.

摘要:
The stratigraphy of the Clarence Series at Cover ham, at the north-east end of the Clarence Valley, eastern Marlborough, is revised. The Wharfe Sandstone, which underlies the “Coverian”, and was previously placed in the Taitai Series, containsInoceramus ipuanus,Inoceramuscf.urius, andAucellinacf.euglyphaand is therefore of Motuan age. Identity of the overlying “Coverian” and Ngaterian is suggested by the occurrence in both of a closely relatedInoceramusspecies. Overseas correlations based on ammonites also support this time equivalence. It is proposed to abandon the “Coverian” as a stage, and to consider the Clarence Series as consisting of three stages: Urutawan (Lower Albian), Motuan (Middle and Upper Albian), and Ngaterian (Cenomanian).

摘要:
The stratigraphy of the lower part of the Waitemata Group within the lower Waikato district is illustrated by nine columnar sections, and recent advances in the biostratigraphic relations of foraminiferal assemblages within the Pareora and uppermost Landon Series of this area are described. Hitherto only Waitakian or Southland ages were assigned to these sediments and the Pareora Series appeared to be absent, but many of the earlier determinations are now known to be of Pareora age.

摘要:
The characteristics of the Jarger and hotter natural hydrothermal systems are discussed, and several different models of heat source and heat-transfer mechanism reviewed. It is shown that, with models depending on mixed conductive-convective heat transfer from a magma chamber, the observed heat flows reauire either a contact area of several hundred square kilometres for the conductive transfer link, or very small separations between a chamber of circulating magma and the convective hot water system. None of the models is entirely satisfactory, and the possibility of heat transfer by magmatic steam is reconsidered in the light of the new isotope evidence, which indicates that most of the water discharged is of surface origin. It is suggested that it would be possible for this surface water to penetrate to and become absorbed by heated rock or magma at great depths and pressures, and for it to be ejected from the rock by subsequent heating, or to escape under reduced pressure to provide a very efficient high-temperature heat-transfer medium that would mix with ground water near the surface.

摘要:
During a detailed soil survey of the Waiotapu district, five deposits laid down by hydrothermal eruptions in the vicinity of Maungakakaramea were identified. These have been named after the lakes that now occupy the five craters. The eruptions were probably triggered by tectonic movements, and derived their energy from the flashing of hot water, which had hydrothermally altered the rocks before they were ejected. The soils and their properties are described in detail, accompanied by chemical analyses.

摘要:
Previous work on New Zealand Permian gastropods is summarised. Seven species of Permian gastropods belonging to four genera are described from the South Island, New Zealand. A new genus,Coronopsis, is described, with two new species,C. vagransandC. regularis.
