摘要:
Argillaceous limestone and greensands (Mahurangi Limestone) possibly up to 1,000 ft thick form the local basement rocks in this area 20 miles north of Auckland, New Zealand. They were previously considered Bortonian (Mid-Eocene) in age, but from their contained microfossils they are now thought to be Whaingaroan to Duntroonian (Lower Oligocene), They are overlain by at least 100 ft of Waitakian (Upper Oligocene) grey-white calcareous siltstone (Wainui Siltstone), which in turn is unconformably overlain by 2,000 ft or more of Otaian (Lower Miocene) mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate (Waitemata Group). Completing the upward sequence is a chaotic deposit up to 500 ft thick, of sandstone, mudstone, claystone, chocolate shale, serpentinite, and concretionary boulders (Onerahi Formation), containing fossils of Mata, Dannevirke, Arnold, and Landon age. Drillhole data, microfaunal age determinations, and economic notes on ground water, limestone, road metals, and serpentinites are given.

摘要:
A zone of vergence change in mesoscopic folds has been mapped near Alexandra and is found to be associated with a zone of steeply dipping quartz-albite layering. This and other aspects of the pattern of mesoscopic structures are taken to indicate that schists of the Alexandra area are part of a large recumbent fold. The trace of its axial plane has been followed for 15 miles; the limbs appear to be at least several thousand feet thick.

摘要:
At Collins River fresh roadcuts reveal serpentinite in contact with spilite and greywacke. Low birefringent fibrous diopside and hydrogrossular have grown at this contact due to alteration by the ultrabasic rock. The presence of this contact on both sides of the body and the body's general concordance with enclosing strata indicate sill intrusion above the minimum temperatures for serpentinisation. Steatite and serpentinite bodies to the east of the body probably originated by faulting of a larger ultramafic mass.

摘要:
Although wall structure is the major basis of taxonomic distinction between two lower Miocene species of the arenaceous textularid genusHaeuslerella, it is difficult to use in some samples. As an aid to identification, measures of external morphology ofHaeuslerellain the type sample ofH. deceptaHornibrook are used to compute functions which minimise errors of classification without recourse to analysis of wall structure. Diameter of the proloculus provides a useful discriminator, but, in upper Otaian to Awamoan samples, risk of misclassification can be lowered by applying a linear function of proloculus diameter and test widths.

摘要:
The grain size distribution measures of a suite of recent beach, dune, and river sands from New Zealand and from Friedman (1961) have been studied. The population of New Zealand sands is comparable to the total population of the combined data. No single descriptive measure (e.g., skewness) can be used to discriminate sands from different environments. A linear discriminant function applied to the New Zealand sand population allows the combined use of the four descriptive measures of mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis. The function distinguishes river sands from beach and dune sands.

摘要:
The shallow earthquake of magnitude 7.0 which occurred in Fiordland on 24 May 1960 was accompanied by 16 foreshocks and 96 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or larger. The number of these earthquakes,N, having a magnitudeMor larger varies with M according to the equationN=a − bM, withb= 1.05. The frequency of occurrence of aftershocks decreased with time in accordance with Omori's equation. Almost all of the epicentres are the same as that of the main shock; however, considering the accuracy of their location, they could be up to about 15 km away. Estimates of the seismic wave velocities beneath New Zealand are obtained from readings of 15 of the earthquakes. ThePnvelocity of 8.13 ± 0.05 km/sec and theSnvelocity of 4.72 ± 0.03 km/sec are based on readings at stations near the same azimuth out to 10° epicentral distance. At stations within 4°,P* andS* phases are prominent and propagate with velocities of 6.59 ± 0.10 km/sec and 3.74 ± 0.11 km/sec respectively.

摘要:
Predicted spring tides in the days following new moon (perigee) on 28 July 1965 were considerably exceeded on the west coast of the North Island. The surface weather maps showed high pressures over south-east Australia, a south-westerly airstream covering New Zealand, and a deep depression over the Chatham Islands: the whole system moving slowly eastwards. Before examining meteorological factQirs which may have contributed to the record high-water levels experienced in both Manukau and Kaipara Harbours on 31 July, consider the automatic tide gauge data.

摘要:
Six samples of coal and shales from two wells in Taranaki were examined palynologically. Microfloral results indicate a Bortonian or Kaiatan (Eocene) age for the coal measures and suggest deposition under estuarine conditions.

摘要:
Eleven samples of mudstones and a line-grained sandstones from a well at Taramakau were examined palynologically. A Bortonian (Eocene) age is indicated by poor pollen floras extracted from six of the samples. Microfloral results suggest that the samples from Taramakau—1 are from Brunner Coal Measures and Island Sandstone.
