摘要:
The distributions of sterane and terpane classes of biological marker hydrocarbons in seven oils and in selected sediment extracts from the Westland basins region have been examined by computerised gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Despite the moderate levels of biodegradation in several of the oils, there are molecular indicators suggesting the incorporation of higher plant derived organic materals in their source rocks. In oils from the Murchison Basin and from Madagascar Beach, there is evidence to suggest that they are of a mixed marine/terrestnal ongin. Oils from the Grey River Basin have been shown to be derived from sediments that have incorporated largely terrigenous organic materials. Moreover, high concentrations of a single diterpanoid hydrocarbon, believed to derive from plant resin constituents in both the oils and in the extracts of sediments (coals and shales) regarded as being potential source rocks, suggest that the oils and coals were derived from the same comferous plant debns. The possibility that the oils are derived from these particular coals/shales has been discounted from a comparison of molecular maturity measurements on the oils and rock extracts. Based upon these data, the Upper Cretaceous Paparoa coals of the Rapahoe sector are of insufficient thermal maturity to have sourced the oils encountered within these measures. Coals and shales comprising the sedimentary succession of the Card Creek-1 well also appear to be of insufficient maturity to have sourced these oils.

摘要:
Strata lying between the Caples Group and the Murihiku Supergroup in the region between Arthurton and Clinton, Southland, and previously assigned to the Waipahi and Arthurton Groups, consist largely of Maitai Group rock units. Associated igneous rocks belong to the Dun Mountain Ophiolite Belt. Rock units south of the ophiolite belt consist, from south to north, of the Waiua Formation, Greville Formation, and undifferentiated lower Maitai Group. The last unit is restricted to a series offault blocks adjacent to the ophiolite belt and probably includes parts of both the Tramway and Little Ben Formations. The Livingstone-Macpherson Fault System separates the ophiolite belt and Maitai Group from the Caples Group and is up to 3 km wide in this region. It contains faultbounded blocks of volcanogenic sandstone inferred to belong to the Little Ben Formation and red and green sandstone and siltstone, here termed theWatties Sandstone. The latter shows a mixed silicic volcanic and low-grade metamorphic provenance similar to the Caples Group.

摘要:
The Jurassic volcanic sequence at Carapace Nunatak and Coombs Hills south Victoria Land, records an initial phase of explosive volcanicity, in part acidic, that was followed by quieter, flood basalt extrusion, a pattern repeated elsewhere in the Transantarctic Mountains. The explosive phase produced poorly sorted volcanogenic material (Mawson Formation) at Coombs Hills, and this was probably contemporaneous with the deposition of coarse lake sediments (Carapace Sandstone Formation) at Carapace Nunatak. The succeeding flood basalts are known as the Kirkpatrick Basalt Group.

摘要:
We propose that various rhyolitic pumice deposits in the Taupo Volcanic Zone and beyond, that were previously called Wairakei Breccia, Waitahanui Breccia (in part), Oruanui (Pumice) Formation, and Kawakawa Tephra Formation, are the products of one large eruption at 20 000 years B.P. On grounds of precedence we name these voluminous depositsWairakei Formationand suggest that other names be made redundant. Correlations across New Zealand and into the Southwest Pacific basin are presented, together with data from a stratigraphic drillhole near Taupo. The large volume of water inferred to have taken part in magma-water explosive interaction came from proto-Lake Taupo. The correlation of these 20 000 year old deposits, previously thought to be different ages, has a bearing on the age of the Huka Falls Formation and the late Quaternary history of the Taupo district and the Waikato River.

摘要:
30 m of sediments are exposed in a terrace face near the upstream end of the Rangitata Gorge, mid Canterbury, New Zealand. Two radiocarbon age determinations indIcate that lake sedimentation predominated from probably over 11 500 years ago until shortly after 7380 years ago. This was followed by a period of fluvial sedimentation derived from local tributary streams. Alluvial fan sedimentation in several South Island valleys after about 7500 years ago may have been caused by a change to cooler and increasingly stormy climatic conditions.
