摘要:
Expert systems are providing a means of solving complex problems that previously defied automation efforts. This paper explains what an expert system is and how one operates. Following a brief description of expert systems, the nature of computer problem-solving and the role of knowledge in that activity are discussed. A typical expert system architecture and common knowledge representation schemes are then described. Finally, the operation of a simple, rule-based expert system is illustrated.

摘要:
The medical field is faced with the increasing sophistication of software-controlled medical equipment. Clinical engineers must understand and become familiar with these sophisticated software-driven medical devices and stand-alone medical software programs in order to evaluate their suitability for the desired purpose. They must be able to assess the nature of the software, its potential and its risks. Numerous aspects of software development and safety must be considered when developing and/or evaluating such software devices and programs.

摘要:
Rapid growth in medical knowledge and improvements in laboratory instruments have created a need for a reliable computer-assisted method of assessing data. Pulmonary Consult was designed as a productivity tool for physicians and structured to support individual configuration and require minimal user training. A hierarchical, rule-based approach was adopted to permit easy expandability and modification of decisions. The system was designed to achieve reliable performance even in the presence of insufficient or inconsistent data. Validation was achieved by comparing general disease classification and severity degrees with those of several individual physicians.

摘要:
An on-line information system has been developed and implemented at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California, to support a ten-bed labor and delivery suite. A Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 750 was programmed to provide on-line multiterminal clinical surveillance. The reports implemented include an obstetrical summary report, labor record, obstetrical clinical record, and the birth certificate. Computer terminals and monitors are placed at the nursing station and other work areas, such as the anesthesia on-call room, obstetrical supervisor's office, on-call room, neonatal ICU, O.R., admission room, and M.D., conferene room. The system includes computer databases used to store information for medical quality assurance, management reports, obligatory statutory reports, and research, and to provide comparison of patient data with data from other hospitals.
