摘要:
A low-cost system for digital transmission of the electrocardiogram (ECG) from a remote location to a medical facility under emergency conditions is developed. Delta threshold, Aztec and a hybrid combination of these two data compression techniques are evaluated to determine their ability to accomplish real time transmission of the ECG over a telephone system. The evaluations are performed using ten electrocardiograms representing arrhythmias commonly encountered in the emergency setting. It is shown that the delta threshold technique may cause data expansion under certain conditions. The hybrid technique is the optimum choice and real-time transmission can be accomplished over a 2400 BAUD system.

摘要:
A new method of displaying the electrocardiogram is described. In this method, the voltages obtained from the precordial leads are presented in a three-dimensional from rather than the conventional two-dimensional metod of plotting voltage-versus-time, for each lead. The display is formed on a cathode ray tube with the time varying along the horizontal coordinate and electrode position along the vertical coordinate. The brightness at any point on the display is determined by the ECG voltage at that time and for that electrode position. A preliminary comparison of the displays obtained from a normal patient and from a patient with an acute myocardial infarction showed specific and easily recognizable differences. The method appears especially advantageous for use by non-cardiologists (e.g. cardiac care nurses in a cardiac care unit.) The distinctive patterns produced by certain abnormalities may be more easily recognizale in the single pictorial display than in the multiple leads of the conventional ECG tracing.

Although clinical testing has not yet been performed, an instrumentation system has been designed to investigate the stability of human stance. Thevectorstabilographallows investigators to record the locus of the center of gravity and micromovements of the subject's body on two axes, frontal and sagittal, during normal standing. The system uses strain gauges for continous translation of these micromechanical oscillations into electrical signals for subsequent amplification, recording, and analysis. The application of improved technology has resulted in high accuracy, linearity, reliability, and simplicity of operation. An apparatus that determines changes in human stability may prove useful in the detection of early stages of pathology or disequilibrium. Specialized disciplines including clinical medicine, otorhinolaryngology, industrial, aerospace, undersea, and sport physiology may benefit from an analysis of micro-motion measurements.

With the growing number of hospitals developing in-house preventive maintenance capabilities, and the increasing number of pieces of equipment and instruments needing preventive maintenance, automatic data processing has emerged as a tool to aid the clinical engineer and hospital in planning preventive maintenance programs. Such a system is CAPMS, or Computer Assisted Preventive Maintenance System. Through the use of CAPMS, the department in charge of Preventive Maintenance can keep accurate records of PM history, safety testing, and year-to-year maintenance costs. Some of the special features of CAPMS INCLUDE: information of availability of equipment for servicing, priorities, and a text file that can be used to print out the procedure form for use during the PM. These additional features make CAPMS a useful tool to the clinical engineer.

The Miami Heart Institute's Electrical Safety and Preventive Maintenance Program has been designed as a stand-alone component of a large-scale, computer-based hospital information system. It ensures regularly scheduled routine inspections, preventive maintenance and, where applicable, calibration of the institution's diagnostic, therapeutic and other electrical equipment used in patient care. The program also schedules and documents inspection of buildings, service equipment and grounding systems. The software consists of a single program which permits on-line entry, editing and display of information as well as automatic, unattended generation of printed forms. This program has been in continuous use since May, 1974.
