摘要:
&NA;Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) programs are becoming an integral part in all sectors including the health‐care industry. The purpose of CQI is to continuously strive to improve the quality of work processes and procedures. To successfully establish such programs, a feedback mechanism is essential in making the adjustments needed for improvement. One method for obtaining necessary feedback is through performance of an operational audit. Operational audits can provide management with an objective analysis for pinpointing shortcomings and developing recommendations concerning company or departmental activities. The department of Biomedical Engineering Services at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre recently completed its first operational audit and found that the process provided valuable feedback for continuous quality improvement within the department.

摘要:
&NA;Brain surgery is often performed to provide relief of symptoms and recovery of impaired neurological functions. Intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring during these procedures can significantly reduce the risk of certain complications, such as ischemia and direct insult to functionally intact neural tissue, since it provides a way to quantify the structural and functional integrity of the neuronal structures at risk. In this part of the series on intraoperative monitoring we give specific examples that demonstrate the usefulness of these procedures during the course of a variety of operations involving the brain, including tumor removal, arteriovenous malformation, aneurysm clipping, and cranial nerve surgery.
