摘要:
Clinical engineering departments have the responsibility for calibration and performance assurance for all applicable clinical instrumentation in the most efficient manner possible. The University of Connecticut Health Center has established an external pacemaker testing protocol that improved the quality of patient safety. Fabrication of an external demand pacemaker test device has enabled our Clinical Engineering department to quickly check compliance with specifications recommended by the manufacturer and Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI). This test device, including the fabrication and necessary documentation, will be explained for the benefit of other Clinical Engineering facilities.

摘要:
A data acquisition and control system built around a single-board BASIC computer is described. Features include four channels of analog-to-digital conversion, two channels of digital-to-analog conversion, four solid-state and two electromagnetic relays, four sense switches, and a 4 × 4 keypad. BASIC programming examples are given for the operation of each feature. A list of manufacturers of single-board BASIC computers is provided, as well as a sample application program.

摘要:
In the selection of body-support media for clinical applications, the distribution of tissue-support interface pressure is an important factor. A compliant, simply operated interface pressure measuring system has been developed using an electropneumatic sensor and a digital display. A pressure transducer is used to convert the internal pressure to a voltage that is displayed in mmHg. Clinical and calibration tests have been performed to assess the value of the device as a clinical tool using volunteers with no history of pressure sores and three body support systems.

摘要:
Although improvements continue to be made in the design of prosthetic cardiac valves, late postoperative problems persist. These difficulties may include hemolysis, thrombosis, thromboembolic and hemorrhagic complications, infectious endocarditis, dehiscence and paravalvular leak, and material degeneration/lack of valve durability. Thrombus formation and thromboembolism are shown to be the most common of the late complications. The incidence of thrombogenicity is significantly higher with mechanical valves than with bioprostheses, and more common following replacement of the mitral valve than the aortic valve
