A computer-based system has been developed that enables semiautomated quantitative measurement of neural structures within the brain. Initially, hemispheric brain volumes were collected from volunteers by trained radiologists using a manual track-ball. Three hours were required to process the image set for one subject. The final, semiautomatic system reduced this time to one-half hour. Quantification of structures was accomplished by contour generation within an MR image. Raw MR data were scaled and preprocessed to compensate for variations in image contrast. An automatic scaling algorithm was developed and used with an operator-set threshold to segment the hemispheres of the brain. The program was successful 95% of the time in automatically generating closed-contour loops that defined the outer edge of a selected structure. This system provides a useful tool for semiautomatically quantifying structures in the brain and is expected to have other clinical and research applications.

摘要:
The lacrimal drainage system drains fluid that exists normally on the surface of the eye into the nasal cavity. This paper describes a hand-held, personal-computer-based instrument to quantitatively estimate the resistance to fluid flow through the lacrimal drainage system. This resistance measurement is proposed as a possible means to diagnose blockage of the system and to verify the degree of change in resistance after clinical treatment. The instrument system consists of a hand-held syringe attached to pressure and flow transducers. Resistance is calculated as the ratio of differential pressure to flow rate and is displayed in real time on a computer monitor.

摘要:
The clinical engineering or medical engineering departments in the hospitals in Switzerland are in a phase of rapid development. In particular, staffing, as well as official recognition by hospital management, needs improvement in many of the hospitals, as is also found in other countries. An overview is given of the current state of affairs in medical engineering in Switzerland, and of the amount of annual investment in medical equipment in the public hospitals. The activities of the Swiss Association of Hospital Engineers in this field are described. The main goals, responsibilities, and tasks of medical engineering departments are presented. The importance of the integration of the medical engineering operation in the management decision process is stressed.

This paper describes the design of a computerized system for ferrokinetics and erythropoiesis measurements. Two interfaces for surface counting investigations are described in detail. The numerical methods adopted for obtaining least-squares fitting of the experimental data to the functions of hematologic interest are described.
