摘要:
The Biomedical Engineering Department (BME) at the University Medical Center, Tucson, Arizona, noted a sharp increase in the use of rented medical equipment. To increase efficiency, control costs, and provide effective quality assurance for rented equipment, a Medical Equipment Rental Vendor (MERV) program was formulated. The program increases efficiency by placing the burden of verifying safety and performance on the MERVs. Performance requirements were developed for the MERVs. The vendors who agreed to the requirements were compiled into a list of preferred vendors to be the primary suppliers of rental medical equipment to UMC. These preferred vendors were given preapproval from BME to deliver equipment directly to the requesting clinical department. All other vendors must continue to submit their equipment to bME for inspection. Policies were written to outline the responsibilities of the clinical departments and BME relative to the MERVs. Frequency of sampling, means of documentation, and assurance of user training were included. Response from the vendors and clinical departments has been positive. Communication between the vendors, clinical departments, and BME has improved through the development and implementation of this program. Vendor and equipment quality have been maintained or improved since compliance with the performance requirements is necessary to maintain preferred vendor status.

摘要:
A real-time, multichannel data acquisition system was constructed using readily available commercial hardware and software. This system can acquire and store information directly to disk. Use of such a configuration avoids the need for an expensive FM recorder. Since data are stored directly to disk, their subsequent transfer to the computer from an auxiliary storage device is unnecessary. Moreover, with direct computer access to acquired data, real-time calculations and analyses can be performed. This data acquisition system can be used with virtually any medical monitor having an analog output. Up to 16 differential inputs or 32 single-ended inputs can be handled during any given recording session. Prototype real-time data acquisition and analysis programs were also developed by the authors.

摘要:
The phenomenon of reactive hyperemia is used to demonstrate the potential clinical application of the continuous-wave NMR flowmeter in the measurement of the steady component of arterial blood flow. An ultrasound study of 15 normal volunteers showed steady flow to be small or nonexistent, particularly in the leg. Therefore, reactive hyperemia was used to induce a steady component in arterial blood flow. But since reactive hyperemia can be used to evaluate peripheral circulation in the human limb, the characteristics of reactive hyperemia are presented and studied for their own worth. A bi-directional Doppler ultrasound velocimeter was used to verify a normal steady component existing in limb blood flow as well as the nature of the change in blood flow caused by reactive hyperemia.

摘要:
The relationship between cuff pressure for the loudest Korotkoff sound and cuff pressure for maximum oscillations was determined in 10 human volunteers. It was found that the loudest sound occurred at a cuff pressure a few percent above that for maximal oscillations, which indicates mean blood pressure. The results of this study indicate that cuff pressure for the loudest Korotkoff sound is a good estimate of mean arterial pressure in man.

摘要:
The methods of statistical pattern recognition are well suited to the problems ofin vivoultrasonic tissue characterization. This paper describes supervised pattern recognition methods for selecting features for tissue classification, calculating decision boundaries within the selected feature space, and evaluating the performance. This paper expands on the authors' previous work (Insana, 1986a) by addressing the considerations of dimensionality and sample size. These are important in classification problems where the underlying probability distributions are not completely known. Examples are given for the detection of diffuse liver disease in the clinical environment.
