摘要:
The confirmation of asthma diagnosis and the evaluation of asthma severity pose time-consuming and expensive inhalation challenges. Their objective is to provoke and register by means of spirometry or airway resistance measurements the naturally occurring asthmatic episodes, and rely on the intelligent and conscientious cooperation on the part of the tested subjects. An alternative method for detection of airway obstruction was developed using measurement of the changes in chest basic electrical impedance Zo during methacholine inhalation challenges. A large surface tetrapolar electrode arrangement was applied to reduce motion artifacts to an acceptable level. A coherent association between spirometric and Zo changes was obtained in all tested subjects. As Zo measurements are not dependent on the cooperation of those tested, this approach has the potential to be used for fluctuating airway obstruction monitoring.

摘要:
Better means of minimizing and controlling thrombosis need to be developed if devices such as artificial organs and controlled drug delivery systems are to continue to be improved.Thrombosis (blood clotting) has been recognized as a problem ever since artificial surfaces were first placed in contact with flowing blood. It is important for clinical engineers as well as other personnel involved in the improvement of healthcare to understand the concepts of thrombosis as they relate to a variety of hospital-based and implanted diagnostic and therapeutic devices, such as kidney dialysis, vascular catheter systems, open heart surgery, and heart valves. Such understanding can be applied in technology evaluation, use protocols, and adverse event investigations.
